Root [Kernel][GB] KoumaKernel 2.5

O that's what kouma meant. he made this cuz of my suggestion but I Thot he was saying it just wouldn't copy over modified file and just change couple lines within. I switched back to regular by time this came out and never really paid attention

good lookin out tho kouma. in case anybody wondering why that exists... IM lazy and found it easier to wipe sd-ext which is dalvik on this setup. and you can wipe data or install new ROM update without having to backup up apps. during factory reset all data except /data/app wiped and /data/data would just rebuild itself for apps. down side is you can't backup of you wanted to. and if you restore gotta format sd-ext after tho. chyeah

Holy crap!! Something worked. I partitioned the SD card earlier with the help of a few here. I got a 16gb card with a 1gb partition at 256M on CWM. Did the dalvik wipe partition format chingadera zip (like I have before) and downloaded the Kouma apk (like I also have before) and it put the 1gb on internal when I selected "data" (like it has before) but this time when I rebooted the phone was snappy as could be like it should be!! Before it was so damn laggy that it was ridiculous as could be. That's why Kouma was trying to explain to me how to use terminal emulator to create a backup of all my apps because a normal sd-ext restore wouldn't work for me and it was impossible to log into market and get 1 or 2 apps within an hour.

This time I was able to log into the market, connect to WiFi and do fresh downloads of everything I need with the normal lightning quick speeds. I was able to open and compose a text without looking at a black screen for 2 minutes while the app opened.

Here are some shots, the only thing done differently this time is the 256swap instead of "0"

Also thanks to Kouma that titanium backup screen shot was only for the pic itself to show how many apps I have. I never thought I could live without titanium backup, but I don't even use it at all anymore. I deleted it after the screen shot. I actually haven't used it for weeks.

Thanks to all here. So damn simple but I don't know why this one was so difficult to overcome. I have plenty of apps and plenty room for more. The data setting is finally working and the 3.6 CTMod is snappy like it should be :D

o I thought you wanted SSM. you using swap partition for swap then?

To be honest, I don't know. All I know.is this thing never worked for me before, my internal memory only showed the stock 160mb and filled up with dalvik so fast that I was getting low memory warnings. Nothing would work right. Right now its working and I'm scared to change or click anything yet LOL!!

so with 634 free must be running data. that works and the ssm is there if want to try to get it working someday.

Yes, I'm on data. Just the data box, I don't think I click led the other box that pops up when data is selected. Before when I clicked data all hell would break loose

hey man, sounds like working great. if want to run ssm someday just ask will help.

Out of curiosity, what steps would I take to do so from where I'm at right now.

If I go ssm can you do data backups and ssm backups and switch back and forth by restoring the backup you want? Or how would you go about switching back and forth?

Thanks!! Thanks to you all.

the backups yes can use to switch back and forth, after you partition the card for ssm and then can be used for data too. but don't know if what you save now will work later??? might??? but if do ssm and then backup then switch to data and configure everything again and backup , can switch back and forth. once you get ssm working right won't want to switch back. and in the sticky at top guide ctmod i posted a way that i got from wet and then modified it for what kouma has done and is pretty easy. just have to save sd contents, it will wipe everything. and will kinda have to start all over, reinstall apps and settings ect....

Hey, I used SSM to partition my SD card. It makes the extended partition ext2. Should I make it ext3 or 4? If so, how can I do that? Also, what's the advantage of making the swap ext? I'm trying to use the best method for doing this.

sorry, but what do you mean(ssm to partition)????? also yes they need to be ext4, and cwm or adb does that.

I used adb shell to partition my sd card. I picked the same swap and extended sizes. It asked for type of extended partition and said ext2 was default. I put ext4 and it still showed up ext2. Also, should you make your swap ext type too? I guess I just don't understand SSM completely and need to know the best way to set up the SD card.

i posted a way that i got from wetbiker7 and worked the 1st time for me. it is in the sticky/guide/ctmod near the end of the thread. and when checking your partitions some will say 2 when they are 4.

I see that. So, you just hit enter when it asks for partition type? Also, do you run SD2EXT4 afterwards to switch it to ext4? Lastly, where do I get Kouma's Odin packer?

they should be listed there in blue, it is down at bottom.

OK, I got SSM to work and followed the directions to get everything working. Once I selected the data option in Kouma Settings and rebooted, EVERYTHING slowed to a crawl and I'm getting multple FC's all the time. Any ideas? I'd like to use SSM and data if that's the best option.

When switching from SSM to Data mode, or vice versa, you need to format your sd-ext partition(s)

This is happening with a formatted sd-ext partition. Basically, I formatted the card, installed CTMod 3.6 from the zip on the recently formatted card, and changed it to Data in Kouma settings. I used SSM to format the card too. Is there something I'm missing? What way do you do it?

SSM does not format cards, it is just a way to utilize he partitions on your card.
changing settings means those partitions get utilized differently, and the only way to ensure that the data left over from booting in the previous mode does not interfere with the operation of the new setting is to erase everything on it.

So, if you didn't format the partition(s) after changing modes with either CWM's format sd-ext, or a ZIP for formatting the partitions like is offered in the OP, you caused your force closes by leaving data scattered across your partitions that Android is unable to deal with.

Here is the correct process:
1> Partition SD card
2> put CTMOD zip on SD card
3> Install CTMOD
4> Boot phone
5> Select desired configuration in KoumaMod settings
6> Reboot in to recovery and format SD-ext (and SD-swap if applicable)
7> Reboot in to Android
8> install your apps
9> ???
10> Profit

You appear to have skipped step 6

Is adb shell sdparted -i the best way to partition the card for KK and 3.6 CTMod? Can you tell me what the stock option SSM does versus Data? Selecting Data shouldn't slow everything down to a crawl should it? I'm wanting the best possible option to run CTMod, install apps, and have the phone run as fast as possible. I've had success in the past with CTMod and KK but haven't tried the newest method until now.

IMO, sdparted -i is the currently easiest way to partition an sd card.
What SSM does is puts the /data/app folder onto sd-ext. This is the apk files themselves of your downloaded apps. It saves a big chunk of space, but more than 1gig is useless, you'll run out of internal space from all the other /data files that are related to settings, cache and stuff from apps long before you fill that up.

What SSM also does, if you pick a size for swap in sdparted -i, and then format it to ext4, is put your dalvik cache onto the sdcard, freeing up some more space, sacrificing a little speed if you have a slow card.

Data mode moves everything from /data to the sdcard, I use it with a class 2 card and I score over 2k on benchmarks.

I think this will be the last time I detail all this out again, all this info is in the OP, and has been repeated several times in many threads.
