Root [Kernel][GB] KoumaKernel 2.5

Try this ( if you have a 4GB sd-card, if you have a 2GB card, make the partitions below smaller, like 512 for ext4 and 256MB for swap ):

1. Flash CTMod again
2. Let you phone boot up totally
3. Use "setting>>>CtMod Settings>>>Partition settings and make a 1GB ext4 and a 512MB swap partition ( slide the FAT partition slider to the left to create more partitions ) Once you have made the 1 GB ext4 and the 512MB swap, slide the FAT slider all the way to the right again..... Then create them....
4. Reboot again and start up the phone
5. Go to Settings>>>CTMod Serttings>>>Kernel settings and select "DATA" and OK
6. IMPORANT : Now hold your power button down for a second or two, select REBOOT, then RECOVERY
7. Now re-format your 1GB sdext again ( NOT YOUR FAT )
8. Then reboot system and see how it works.
9. This first boot could take 5 - 10 minutes !

PS: If that doesn't work, try the same procedure with several different sd-cards..... It's almost always an issue with getting the partitions correct on the sd-card..... some cards just don't like the Prevail, but working fine in other devices !

After you got it working, go to Settings>>>CTMod Settings>>> Kernel settings and set the swap to :
1. Line : /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 / then priority 100 / swappiness 60 )

Reboot and try !! Let us know !!

I followed the instructions on the noobs guide to prevail rooting and I cannot get my phone to reboot after the data setting chosen. I have tried it a dozen times, with my new 16gb card and my old 2gb card, with different est sizes and still noting. I even tried the instructions ^^^ with the same result, it's been on the kk screen for 15min now.

Being stuck on KK-Logo has 99% of the time to do with the sd-card. Either the phone doesn't like the card or there is something wrong how the card got formatted !

Googls for "MiniTool Partition Wizard", it's a free Windows program. Then put your sd-card in card reader and connect it to your PC...... Remove all partitions on the card and create ONE FAT32 partition , occupying the whole size of the card, then format it with FAT32 and put it back in your phone, go to CWM and create a 2048MB ( 2GB ) partition there, copy CTMod2.75.2 back to the card's FAT partition, then re-flash and see if that works !!

WARNING : DO NOT CREATE THE "ext4" PARTITION IN THE MINITOOL WIZARD ON YOUR PC, IT WON'T WORK !!!

Ok, here is my update. I tried reflashing ctmod again and no go, then I tried the formatting with the minitools partition wizard. (it crashed my system, had to go to system recovery to get my computer running again, scary) and it did not make a difference. So, I decided to try something totally different. after trying several things that didn't work, I discovers this: Instead of rebooting to recovery on the last step, I just rebooted, per the instructions that poped up on the phone itself. This actually worked. I discovered this while I had the 2g card in there. so I did it all AGAIN, and my Samsung card would hang on the KK screen, crud. Off to Fry's and a Duracell card, reflashed everything AGAIN, and skipped the reformatting after selecting data. Now the pone works perfectly, I have 2g of internal memory, CTmod and Kouma Kernel have superuser permission, the data is checked in settings, and my apps install to the internal memory. I can't find anything that isn't working properly. I think the final step of rebooting to recovery and reformatting the sdext is what is not working. When installing ctmod, the update information says it is formatting the sdext.

Has anyone else had this happen? Maybe I am the only one to have this happen. Is there any test I can do to confirm that there is not a problem with the ommission of the last sdext format?

Yes, a very simple test. Go to settings> storage. If you have internal memory relative to the size of your sdext then you succeeded.:)

Internal storage at 1.73GB with Ulysse speedo, Netflix, and Walgreens apps installed and working. I think before I installed any apps it was 2.04GB or something like that. Thanks for the suggestion, it looks like I'm done and I love the way the phone works now, exactly like I envisioned it. Yay.

Thanks lordvincent 90 for your extaordinary help and patience. I would not have been able to do it without your help and encouragement.

Tried all kinds of repartitioning and card-swapping. I just can't seem to get DATA mode happening on 3.75.2. It's driving me nuts. FWIW though, DATA mode seems to work perfectly on 3.68. I've flipped it into DATA mode on 3.68 on several flashes on several cards and partitions without problems. Did something happen between 3.68 and 3.75.2 that could be causing this?

Would have stuck with 3.68, but I seem to be having GPS issues with 3.68 (can't get signal). I'll try another flash and rebuild and see if this time I can get GPS working on 3.68.

Don't give up, I just installed it with CWM, and it works perfectly, but I had to trouble shoot it for a bit with help from forum members. I can attest to the fact that it does work in DATA mode, my phone is running it now.

Update: -- Got GPS working. Just getting some kind of error on Google Maps that says I'm "login failed." Thanks for the encouragement Bikeguy. I've just lost a weekend screwing around with it (it was kind of fun, actually), so maybe I'll give it a try in a few weeks with help from forum members.

There should have been errors in you drop down menu for login failure. IF there were, tap on them and allow access.

Correction: No GPS in DATA mode on 3.68. Thought it was working, but it wasn't. I'm probably better off if I can get 3.75.2 in DATA mode anyways. It's probably more productive for me to get 3.75.2 running in DATA mode than to try to get GPS on 3.68 DATA mode.

No drop-down menu for "login failed," BTW. Phone is logged in to Google and my contacts sync. GPS works fine in "none" mode in 3.68 (and "none" and SSM in 3.75.2), so it's not a hardware problem unless it has something to do with access to the SD-card.

I might be able to get by with SSM mode in 3.75.2. I just need to figure out what I'm doing wrong since in 3.75.2 SSM mode I'm only getting like 95 MB showing as available internal storage after loading a few apps. It doesn't appear to be using the swap file I set, as the swap file's size stays at 0 KB (Permissions issue?). I need to read up on how to use and set SSM. Any links or pointers to pages or URLs that would explain how to setup SSM would be most appreciated. [Duhh . . . just found it at http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/429740-kernel-gb-koumakernel-2-5-a.html ]

Just ordered a Sandisk 8 GB Class 10 Micro SDHC. Hopefully that will fix my inability to boot into 3.75.2 DATA mode. No joy with a Patriot or Samsung SDHC, but maybe 3rd time will be a charm. Due to the problem with being unable to get GPS location with 3.68, I'll just use 3.75.2 in SSM until the new card arrives.

I never had any GPS issues with any version of CTMod...... Compass apps did not do to well, until it got fixed in the 3.75.2 Final..... But I never heard someone having GPS issues.....

What base band are you using ? I use FE16 and F19 and GPS works on both base bands with CTMod3.75.2 just fine..........

PS: Most all of my sd-cards are Sandisk and work fine in the Prevail ! ;) Good luck

Yes, GPS works fine for me on 3.75.2 also. It only doesn't work in 3.68 for me.

How do I find out what my baseband is? Last non CTMod update was FF19 Rooted, I think.

Just noticed I'm getting other strange behavior though. Just after installing 3.75.2 SSM and a bunch of apps, rebooting to CWM recovery and running backup, I'm missing several apps and have weird files stuck in app list. Files are still gone even after restoring from the CWM backup. This has happened twice now, consecutively. A mere reboot doesn't cause this -- I have to run CWM backup (or maybe just boot to recovery).

Maybe I've got a bad SD card or corrupt CWM install. I'll try a fresh SD card in a day or two.

I think you should/need start over fresh with using Odin and use FE16_Rooted_CWM5 or the FF19_Rooted_CWM5...... and then re-flashing CTMod3.75.2 and NOT restoring, but re-downloading your apps....... Many things have changed between CTMod3.68 and the 3.75.2 version, it's almost a different ROM, so restoring your old data from a backup is causing your troubles..........

BTW....... the slightly older FE16 works much better for me, but you gotta test that in your area !

Yet another newbie question: Which version of CWM should I be using on a Prevail (original Prevail, not "Prevail 2")? I've been using 5.0.2.7. I ask because my last few restores came out kind of funny, with missing apps, missing widgets, and some junk files listed as apps in Settings/Applications/Manage Applications.

YIPPEE! I finally got DATA mode on 3.75.2. Here's what I did:

1) Got new SD card (PNY 8GB Class 10).

2) Formatted it in Minitool (on Win 7) as primary with one FAT32 partition taking up the entire card and no drive letter assigned

Installed into phone with fresh 3.75.2 and partitioned card into two partitions of approximately equal size.

Rebooted phone.

Put kernel into data mode under CTMod Settings/Kernel settings.

Rebooted WITHOUT formatting sd-ext with CWM.

Took screenshot of storage settings to post here.

Shut down phone and put SD-card into computer to read (to send screenshot to this forum). I have a driver issue (WPD code 10 error) and can't get computer to read SD-card in phone via USB -- That's why I took the card out to read it on the Windows box.

Win7 threw yet another WPD code 10 error. Went into Windows' native disk manager (diskmgmt.msc) and assigned a drive letter to the FAT32 partition on the card (not the ext partition formatted ext4).

Returned card to phone with drive letter now assigned in Windows to the FAT32 partition.

So far, so good!

YIPEE! Got DATA mode working in 3.75.2.

For those who have my issue, here's what I did, listed as instructions.

1) Fresh PNY 8GB Class 10 card;
2) Format as full 8 GB partition in Minitool Partition Wizard (on Win7). Use primary FAT32, with no drive letter assigned;
3) Boot into fresh install of 3.75.2.
4) Using tool (sdparter) on phone under Settings/CTMod Settings/Partition settings, partition card into two approximately equal partitions: 1st=default (FAT), 2nd=ext4);
5) Reboot (contrary to previous instructions, I did not use CWM to format sd-ext at this or any point);
6) Go into CTMod settings/Kernel settings and put phone into DATA mode;
7) Reboot.

About 3 minutes later, I'm in DATA mode with 3.xxGB showing as available Internal Storage!!!:D :D :D

Was gonna' post a screenshot showing the 3.51 available Internal Storage, but I haven't figured out yet how to upload screenshots to posts in this forum.

8) [optional] Because SD card now has no drive letter assigned in Windows, Windows won't be able to read it when SD card is in the SDHC card reader in the Windows box. My Win7 box threw a WPD code 10 error in device manager because it couldn't read the SD card. To solve this issue, return the card to Windows7 box (after unmount or power down of phone) and assign a drive letter to the FAT32 partition on the card using Windows native diskmgmt.msc . Un-lettered SD partitions will be listed at the top of the diskmgmt.msc window. I returned card to phone after doing this, and it still works fine, but now the card can be read with SD card reader on the Windows box.
