LG G3 Pre-release/Rumor/Speculation Thread

Good point about Samsung radios. My S3 and S4 were/are wimpy. My sons iPhone and DNA mock my S4's weak signal when traveling. "Sad" but true.

Another day and no new news. I didn't expect that almost a month after the unveil that we wouldn't know much more than the speculation leading up to the event:rolleyes:

I've pretty much given hope on this one. Best intentions, mediocre follow through.

Which fits my demented theory that if Tmo has exclusivity with the 3/32, why post specs now and give time for the media to nitpick? That could be why no news from the other carriers. Wait just before launch when on the low end of the spec list.

And for folks that wonder if specs are not considered, why do we think we have a Qhd display in the first place ;) Even if consumers are not 100% aware, the marketing departments of the carriers are micro sensitive to it. 1gb less ram, half the storage and a slower clock is a big gap in the minds of marketing. Just a theory based on working with marketing for more years than I wanted to. Four of them in consumer electronics. Truly thankless experience.

It's been a fun ride guys.... but I've decided to order a couple M8's tomorrow.

I'd love to continue to hang out in here for the company and speculation. I won't disparage the G3 since I'm not getting it. If anyone would prefer I move on from this thread please let me know and I'll go quietly.

Sorry to lose you here, but I totally understand. I'm not far behind. Before you pull the trigger, just curious why M8 and what else was considered? I will say this as an M7 owner...... I almost never listen to the wonderful speakers, and they're truly better than any other phone, but truly underwhelming compared to anything else. That, and I get a pretty weak signal. The waterproof case of the Sammy has me intrigued, as a more useful feature.

Not to dissuade you, but I'm struggling with the same decision myself, especially with how silky sense 6 is. Ugh.

My last couple phones (Gnex and GS3) have been sammies and due to the poor reception I've experienced with these; the S5 was ruled out of my consideration set. I was with a friend in the mountains this weekend and I had no signal on my GS3 and he had usable 3g on his m7.

I spend a lot of time on airplanes and listen to music, watch movies, and play candy crush:o during that time and I like the battery reports I've seen on the M8. I have a really nice DSLR for when I need/want to take photos so the mediocre camera on the M8 isn't an issue for me.

After a lot of consideration... I just don't think the G3 can push that screen and not suffer in battery life:o I think the final nail in the coffin was this:

Earlymon (regarding battery life review I posted of 4 hrs):

"I hope he's insane.

I'm at 9 hours off the charger, 3.5 hours screen on (normal use for me, surfing and doing stuff) with my screen auto-brightness keeping me at the second-highest level for 85% of the time, and I'm only down to 55% - Gsam Battery Monitor says to expect between 5 and 8 more hours of use at my present rate.

I expect nothing less from any flagship."

Mathiasdk1 post from today regarding screen on time of his Nordic G3:

"I've tried emulating difference usage scenarious over the last couple of days.

On day 1 Iused the phone like I normally would from 95 - 50% and then I turned on the hotspot function. Unfortunately I didn't remember to take screenshots of the sot, and I can't remember the numbers. I can however remember using the hotspot function continuously for 5 hours, before the phone had 18% power, and I turned it off.

On day two I used it as a "normal" non heavy user would, having everything auto-sync, push-mail, but no BT, GPS etc. turned on. 75% screen brightness.
in 14 and 49 minutes the phone went from 100% - 56% power, having 1 hour and 44 minutes screen on time. I then used the phone continously for around a quater, resulting in the phone having 51% power left, with 1 hour 58 minutes of screen on time.

day three; I used the phone like I normally would from 100% - 50% power (again I forgot to take screen shots).
Then I walked outside and adjusted the brightness from 75% up to 100%, and turned on a movie, streaming via LTE, from Netflix. (fyi it was around 30 degress celcius on the terrace)
The movie was 1 hour and 40 minutes long, after the movie the phone had 18% power left. At that point the phone had been turned on for 9,5 hours, the sot was 2 hours and 57 minutes.
The screen had used 50% of the power used, Netflix 11% and I had used 700MB streaming the movie.

I think I'll be gettign around 3,5 - 4 hours of sot in an everyday situation, depending on how much time I'm outside. "

PM me if you would like more thoughts.

I've always had 5 hours of SOT with the G2. I would have expected the G3 to get at least 6. I would definitely have to buy a spare battery or a bigger one.

I would be all over the M8, but my buddy has one and it won't get an LTE signal, while the S5, M7, and my DNA will at my desk. G2 will as well. I am guessing due to the metal case. This is on VZW.

Go quietly? What are you nuts? Feel free to hack away at the g3. It's only a phone. People & relationships are far more important than phones, obviously? Please remain here. It's nice to hang out with you again. Just like old times? :-)

I can say, what I enjoy most is the loud, clean sound from the headphones, so if you can get past the camera, you're probably making the right call. I'm less worried about the G3 battery because it sounds pretty amazing unless you hammer the screen, and for my usage purposes, those will almost always be planned events that I can pack another battery or external charger. Not sure how to pm (really am a noobie), but if you have any questions for me I'm always around.

Interesting.... will only be a test ride if that ends up being my experience.

Noticed the same thing at work and out. I love the speakers and headphone output, but comparing signal to my already challenged S4, the S4 is 2 dBm stronger. If "stronger" is the best word in this comparison. Regardless, metal is not exactly the best material for signal reception. At least not a unibody design.

And yeah, baby M8 got bezel. They should have left the capacitive nav bar to use the space rather than the nav bar sucking up display space. Wasted space that the device tear down shows. That and the depth camera causing a device that is taller than the G3. Seems better to use a better camera sensor and nix the depth camera. Then not so funky tall for the display size.

I am bold here, but would not post as such in a M8 thread. The pixie dust is still strong with many M8ers. :)

It does have 32gb though, so maybe the last laugh. The signal though where I live is the main thing. S4 is borderline already.

Screw it... iPhone 6 it is:p

When I bought G2 I compared its radio strength against M8, S5 at multiple locations. M8 was consistently dead last among 3 phones by at least 5dbm. S5 and G2 are pretty close and noticeably better than M8, S3/S4.

You know, with the A8 and a 128gb model...... Google is going more Apple like with each iteration of the OS....

Nah, a 128gb model would cost bunches. Assuming they even release the size. iTunes ball and chain to consider as well.

I'm currently carrying both a iPhone 5s and GS3. So I've got a foot in each ecosystem:p

Did you notice a real world performance difference or just a difference in reported dbm?

They've all got strengths and at least one weakness. I'm thinking I can live with the weakness in the G3 for my purposes, but the storage issue could kill it. Pretty much the only thing at this point. Or the Sammy prime coming out.

It's mostly dbm numbers reading. It's hard to see difference in actual connection quality, speed between these phones from what I saw. For me, signal reception is not much concern today as new phones with S800/S801 chips seem to do very well.
