Not the same driver. It could be your driver installation.
The driver for transferring files to/from the sdcard is a generic mass storage driver.
the driver used for ODIN is a serial port driver.
try reinstalling the samsung USB driver, reboot your computer and try again

i reinstalled the samsung drivers included in the FA19 download, i have my original samsung data cable, i restarted my computer and i still cant get odin to recognize my phone.
i looked through the forums some more and even googled it. what i find strange is that this is the same computer i flashed EJ06 to my prevail with and have changed anything, any ideas?

maybe the cable? strange that it would work to transfer files, unless the mass storage mode is more forgiving about dropped bytes.
I've found the original cable to be a cheap POS and have replaced mine with a much higher quality one that I bought from an online retailer who's warehouse is a couple blocks from where I work so I can skip the shipping charges.

failing that, there is the standby list for troubleshooting:
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS

unplug sdcard
try again
unplug battery
try again
try different USB port
try again
try different USB cable
try again
try different computer
try again

You only fail when you stop trying

i feel like such an idiot. so i actually have two of these cables. one in my room and one plugged into my computer. the one in my room is a 6 ft knockoff i only use to charge my phone, the other is plugged into my laptop which is plugged into my 60" tv i use as my monitor, well it seems my wifes dumb ass cat has chewed through half of it. strange it will charge my phone and still allow me to transfer files. oddly enough the crappy one actually worked. thank you for your help.

now for another question. what is the significance of having the base band different than the android version. i have found tutorials in the forums on how to do it but what is the purpose of doing this?

now for another question. what is the significance of having the base band different than the android version. i have found tutorials in the forums on how to do it but what is the purpose of doing this?

it's useful for when you want the latest version of android on your phone, but the latest baseband is broken

Kinda like our current situation where FA19 is android 2.3.6 and is the latest ooh shiny, but the baseband pushed out with FA19 has connectivity issues.

So people will ODIN in EJ06 then CWM an FA19 rom to the phone.
You get the better performing baseband, and the newest OS features, and not have to deal with the update reminder

anyone have an answer to this? i did't do update used autostarts to stop message, i have made like 30 or so backups in cwm and now since update came out can't do a backup it starts and then halfway through the fist part of system it says error and stops

If you want to have your phone rooted this is not the thread for it.

You need to go to this thread below:

[ACS] One Click Root Samsung Prevail/Replenish Shabbyfied

After rooting go to the link below to install ClockWorkMod:

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/390234-clockworkmod-update-10-28-new-version-v5-0-2-6-a.html

Then... you can choose your favorite Rom...

Yes, you can use Odin on a functional prevail. I have several times, and YES this isa way to root your device, so long as you choose a rooted Odin image...

I odin'd New FA19 (stock and rooted with CWM). very good job.
Now I can't restore from a backup. It always ERROR during system format, while trying to do a restore. and won't mount system in CWM. have partitioned, formatted, and every other thing I could think of. wiped everything, even and started from scratch several times with a new odin install again but to no avail. always gets error while doing restore from any and all backups. the error happens during the system format part, some can't read a block device thing.
 if there is something or some way to test something I am willing to do what ever. or a file or log somewhere that you would need.?

thanx in advance

I went back and Odin'ed a copy of CWMv5.0.2.6 over the v5.0.2.7 ,removed the boot and recovery images from each backup I made, AND the corresponding lines from nandroid.md5 files. now my old and new backups restore just fine. And I still have rooted FA19.

thanks goes out to all the Devs who did all the work on this Prevail, Their work is outstanding.

Just want to say thanks to Hroark13, Koumajutsu, Shabbypenguin, and Bloodawn for their awesome work on this phone, and also thanks to the contributers who have helped them along with everything, and finally all the other folks here at this forum who have posted their knowledge to help newbs like me become a little less like a phonetard. (including but by no means limited to Wetbiker7 and LordVincent 90) You have helped make my phone awesome, me happy, and kept my husband from choking me for bricking a perfectly good, yet pricy (I bought it right away when it was released for 180) phone.

Thank You!!!

Hail Odin, guardian of Prevail :D

hows it going? i rooted my wifes prevail with the fa19 root cwm earlier today. after it all went smooth and i set her phone up as normal. and logged into her google account it said there was an update for super user so i updated it then i tried to install busybox but it told me to update the su binary. it updated successfully the 2nd time and when i rebooted it was no longer rootes. is busybox bad for this phone? or should i not update the su binary? thanks for this root method btw.

it already has busybox

I have seen nothing but problems with that busybox updater

just Odin the FA19 image and you can update the super user on market

that is all you need to do

It's brand new ;) right? Just call Samsung, you will have it back in no time (~2 weeks)

Or, you could
unplug sdcard
try again
unplug battery
try again
try different USB port
try again
try different USB cable
try again
try different computer
try again

The link to this file is bad and I would like to try to recover my phone back to that point.

I even tried searching the web, no luck... Does anyone have a link to this file?
