***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

For the first time tonight, my wife actually seems happy for me. Maybe it's the holiday spirit.

She's not even yelling at me for typing in bed here at a quarter of six, haha.

LOL, you've got a keeper. ;) I actually got all my clothes ready last night and snuck downstairs so I wouldn't wake up the "boss" and my other smaller "boss" (16 month old daughter).

My wife is very happy for me now that I can finally shut up about the phone. :p

I'll be grabbing some DD coffee and waiting (im)patiently for doors to open. At least my local corporate store opens at 8:00 FTW. This def won't be like a fruit phone launch but wonder how many folks will be eagerly waiting for the phone like folks on this forum.

Don't think Steven has posted his final post yet, but then again, I'm like a bazillion pages behind from last night.

Who's gotten their computer set up to unlock the BL and root as soon as he gets home? <jumps up and down and waves furiously>

I'm not goig to lie, I've never rooted a thing as I don't trust myself yet, but after giving this phone a whirl for a bit and hopefully with the help of you nice folks on this thread, I'll give it a shot when something super stable and easy comes down the pipe.

That's really good news to hear. I remember when my Inc updated to Froyo and got Flash, I was so thrilled. I was nervous I was taking a step backwards in that department. A few more weeks won't kill me.

Yeah, Flash is so prevalent on sites that I can't believe the fruit company just ignored it. I guess companies will be going to Flash alternatives in time.

Lol, you've almost nailed my exact scenario.

I should do that now. only 2 hours left.

It'll be a little scary when you do it for the first time. If you have a friend nearby who's done it, get them to help you out. I had the original Nexus One and even though it's easy peasy to unlock and root, I was totally freaked out the first time that I would brick it. :o But pretty easy all in all. I believe P3 will provide a one-click root soon for the VZ Gnex.

Remember that unlocking the BL or rooting doesn't change the software (ie: doesn't impact stability) but allows you to install kernels or modify/install root level programs. It's when you start flashing custom ROMs you may run into some stability issues. I think I'll enjoy stock for a bit and then see what's out there.

Can you explain to me why you would root and not install custom roms? I apologize for the ignorance.

Edit: I just read your post more carefully. Seems that you can do other things to your phone without custom roms. Thanks.

Root still comes in handy even if you like the stock rom. You need to root for overclock and for read/write access to the system. I'll be rooting right away and removing the bloat apps, but I'm in no rush to flash a custom rom.

Remove VZ bloatware, install root-only apps (Titanium, CWM, SetCPU, etc.).

Thank you. I really need to research and learn more about this stuff. Unfortunately, I've got no buddies who are remotely interested in this stuff like I am so I'd be the first of my group to attempt this sort of thing. I believe I'll have to wait until there is a really simple method as I am a visual learner and don't trust myself to do it based on text alone...at least initially.

Take it nice and slow (no need to rush) and only do when you feel comfortable. There's a lot of help on forums, and I'm sure there will be somebody who will youtube this process. I agree it's easier for me to grasp visually than read. And I've discovered that lots of times some steps are left out since it's assumed that folks will know to do, and this can trip up folks who are new to the process. I remember reading XDA for the first time and thinking, hunh??

Had my first Nexus related dream last night... I was leaving my place to go get it and I went on here and said something to the effect of "I've really enjoyed lurking and reading all the info, but I hope nobody is offended by me saying I'd gladly trade this thread for my new Nexus :P" ... Well I guess now it was a prophetic dream, sort of! But really thanks for all the info to everybody.

LOL - I took the WHOLE day off! I had vacation days to burn so why not take on an AWESOME DAY LIKE TODAY!!

That's GREAT! I would have done the same except I already took a few days in October to go with my wife to Vegas on a business trip (her job payed for everything so I couldn't pass it up) and it is always frowned upon in my school/community for us to take time off during the year since we get so many vacations to begin with. I respect that, so I try to minimize my time off, but while I try to minimize it, I don't think I do a good job of it as I also took a sick day during the release of MW3. ;)

My theory is, it is this exact type of youthful exuberance that makes me the good teacher I am... They need to accept the good with the bad, haha.

I'm sure everyone would agree with your sentiments - phone over thread! Though reading and taking part in this thread really has been a brilliant experience. The mods are superb, the vast majority of posters are awesome and welcoming, and theres been a smorgasbord of lounge like topics that have been allowed (annoyed some folks but in my opinion, made this thread like no other thread I've been on).

You HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! Whenever asking for advice on this thread I always put the disclaimer of feel free to treat me like a fool and state it as simple as possible. I don't blame people for assuming, because it is probably so elementary for them... But not for me.
