Root [Release] Android 2.2 Froyo for the Droid X

its irronic since releasing the SBF would probably cut down on the amount of returns. I know I rather take an hour to figure out how to unbrick rather than send my phone out and wait 2 days for the exchange (if its in stock)

Also if they hadn't locked the bootloader, they would have most likely sold more units over all. I'm no math wiz but it seems that these two things would have ended up as more money in there pockets if they had just gone the other way.

Ironic now that the phone has been all but completely hacked (i'm sure it will be 100% hacked soon) so all this effort to save on 3 weeks worth of possible bricked phone returns due to hacking.

I always thought it would be a good idea for them to use the efuse to simply flag the phone and use it to refuse warranty. Hell they could make it a click I agree options. That way we get to play and they don't have to worry about returns. They might even make out on that deal. Say your camera failed and it had nothing to do with rooting or ROM flashing.
But you agreed to fore-go warranty service, for the fun of mucking around with your phone. So they would make out since they could turn away phones that had legitimate issues not related to rooting. On top of that since we wouldn't have a warranty service we would be careful before we go flashing who knows what or even how? :D which would also prevent possible returns.

In short They're stupid.

flash the sbf? re root with one click is a no brainer and I guess I can move bin to xbin with root explorer?

yes you can move it with root explorer, make sure you move it not copy it

and i you need help flashing the sbf?
do you have the sbf and rsd lit 4.7 with the patch?
I have both of them uploaded so let me know if you need them

no I don't have them I don't even know how to use them.
I had thought I could just move the file and update.
BUT I have several APK files that are renamed to BAK to keep them from loading and Im already rooted.

it might work it might not, you can try then get back to me if you want or you can just do it the first time:D

umm the one that talked about after you have 2.2?
I re did the OP let me know if its still there

Yea I assumed it was still there. Sorry! I guess I also assumed this guy was in the same situation as me...rooted but didn't carry over to2.2... Carry on!

Bored at work haha.

man...I prepared myself very well to go back to 2.1 just in case I screwed things up and had all the tools ready

booted into recovery, ran update.zip...voila...no problems

and maintained root

thanks guys

I want to thank everyone for your help. now that I did that :)
I said earlier I have 2.1update1 604 I have root, root explorer and wireless tether.
I don't want to loose any settings, I also have renamed apps from apk to bak.
question is the 2.2 I have downloaded today the final release? If I get this updated do I loose things like Need for speed and the superuser apps I have installed?
I really don't want to brick the phone or have any issues. Also whats happens if VZW tries to update me?

thanks to all.

ooooh boy. Followed instructions to a T... rebooted... nuthin but the Moto logo. After a period of time I do get voice responses (verizon wireless not available) but still only the Moto logo. Also... windows 7 no longer connects to the unit. Won't load the driver.

I have seen several posts of others getting the Moto Logo and nothing else... I have seen nothing as to why this happens or a fix...

Anyone? Anybody? shed some light or help a fella with a now bricked phone?

............. Minutes Later....

Well this is interesting. I can do a 'power/vol/cam' sequence after pulling the battery and I do get a screen with 'bootloader 30.01 Battery OK Ok to Program .... Transfer mode USB

Now.... where to go from here

.............. Even more minutes later....

I'm pretty sure it's coming up... just without a screen. I ultimately get notifcation sounds and a message in plain speech 'verizon wireless' but it just sits at the Moto Logo.

The instructions in the first post have the general idea down, you want to be stock, so those apps should be reinstated from .bak to .apk and move, not copy, su from the /system/bin to /system/xbin. Also, I still have Need for Speed on rooted 2.2, so it should still be there for you. I also beleive the other apps you had installed will carry over. I doubt this release is the final release as there appears to be a couple of obvious bugs left to sort out (rebooting that requires a battery pull and a few other issues such as the battery info bug).

As far as bricking goes, it appears that flashing back to the 2.1 sbf is a pretty solid fall-back although there is always a chance that it just won't work.

When the official VZW update hits, I have absolutely no clue what will happen, but I think you will at least be able to accept or reject the update. I recommend rejecting the update until you find out otherwise. :)

If you haven't tried unplugging the phone from power, then pulling the battery, give that a shot. I hope it is that simple for you. Keep us updated! :D

so it appears all I will have to do before the official update is rename the bak back to apk on the bloatware and move the SU. I'm guessing I can leave it rooted? then I will be able to accept the VZW update. from all the threads it appears a little buggy just yet.

Well this is interesting. After hours of dinking with the X and trying to get it to 'reboot' after the upgrade and only getting the Moto Logo again... I knew it had to be running, just without a screen, because I would get sounds from the unit including the 'verizon wireless' msg you get on boot up. I finally called it a night last night WITHOUT reverting to a recovery process back to 2.1 (I wisely made a koush recovery backup before starting this whole endeavor). So.... I wake up several hours later... can't sleep for 'missing' my poor droid... got up and decided to just pull the battery and power, which I had done numerous times last night, and DAMNED if I didn't get the droid eye on power up and ultimately a screen. Once completely up there was a dialog box:

"Sorry

The application MyLink Advanced for Outlook 1.4.6 (process com.mylink.advanced.outlook) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."

I went to 'settings' advanced and 'about' and HOT DAMN!!!! It showed 2.2 for the Android version.

Have no explanation as to why this has occurred this way. Hours of restarting, power cycling, and nothing last night. Let it set and in the words of John Madden 'BOOM' the power cycle worked this morning!

Aside from being really sluggish in it's responses... it appears to be working. Not all that impressed yet as I did not expect the unit to be MUCH slower than it was with 2.1 however I will continue to mess with it here and report back shortly.

At this point it looks like my droid was just trying to recover from it's 'transfusion' last night and needed a little.... ok.. a lot of extra time to do so.

Ok.... some feedback...

After another 'short' period of waiting the response time picked up but smashing differences between 2.2 and 2.1 in the response time dept were non-existant.

Quadrant score (after killing all extraneous apps) was 1320. Believe it to have been there with 2.1

Was pleasantly surprised to find when it finally came out of it's Moto Logo hypnotic state that all programs, configuration, etc. from my 2.1 environment appear to be fully intact in 2.2.

Root is out the window. I FOLLOWED the instructions last night before everyone started indicated you had to mv (move)... not cp (copy) the su command. Was able to get to terminal screen within the unit but no root access. Hope I can do this without having to revert to reloading to 2.1 and starting over tho.... I guess this is 'good' practice to go through these exercises.

So far.... all apps are go accept outlook related app (most likely needs an update).

Can browse internet without issue.
Can get to droid market and download/update without issue.
Dissapointed that netflix still will not run given I thought the flash capability would overcome that but looks to be a lack of neflix support for the android OS.
Web sites out there indicated I do have flash player installed and it is version 10.1.72 and thus far the only flash example I have been able to bring it, which works, is the one directly from Adobe's flash download site.
There are most certainly issues with droid drivers in windows 7. The same drivers that worked prior to the upgrade no longer work and I can not connect to the X. I will continue to mess with this and report back later.
..... later... ok... the windows 7 driver issue seems to be in part associated primarily with the usb 'pc' mode of the droid. If I go into 'usb mass storage' mode I can access the sd card in windows.
Well this seems to be disconcerting. Bluetooth appears to be hosed. Says that it is 'paired' with my various bluetooth devices however I can not connect nor re-discover them at all..... ok... scratch that... mearly had to turn off bluetooth and turn it back on again then re-pair the devices.
All forms of 'connectivity' (other than USB) are a go.

Observations...

Other than the rising panic that I may have made a nifty little door stop out of my droid... ultimately I am happy with the fact that all things loaded/configured before the upgrade were still there after the upgrade and look to be functional.

The upgrade itself? Pretty much a yawner. I have seen absolutely no improvements/advancements either audibly, visually, or otherwise that even suggests an upgrade actually occurred other than the flash functionality.

Ultimately will want to reload root access and koush's backup/recovery tools if I can confirm they are compatible now.

Well I'll continue to mess with this and see if I can overcome windows 7 driver issues.

@hdokes
if you want 2.2 with root, I would suggest backing up with Titanium backup first

wipe data and cache
flash sbf
re-root with universalroot
move su to xbin
update
restore with TiBu

ANYONE that wants this leaked update BETTER GET IT FAST

P3Droid
hello droid fans...we have been hit with the infamous C & D.....u know what that means

P3Droid
Retweet....3 hrs until plug pulled on mirrors as well...DL NOW

Is this leaked one better than the OP's link to the Official Froyo release here?

I just read the topic and the first post again. There's no mention that these are leaked or non-official. Thanks!

okay I will add that, they are leaked official builds, cause it is signed by moto, koush's is not because he rooted it and you have to apply it through clockwork

neither of these are official, they are both leaked. The update.zip at the bottom of the OP is the froyo you want

Except that link is broken because of the c&d.

I never got a reply back.. were there two different ersions of DX froyo released? Obviously I'd want the latest version.

Only thing untoward I see on my 2.2 is a slower then normal change from portrait mode to landscape (and back again) and an occasional graphic glitch when using swype.

There are two versions. One, koush took the leak and rooted it. It can only be applied through the updated bootstrap. The other is the original leak by P3Droid.
BTW I updated the OP with a new update.zip
