Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

guys, I gotta go now...gotta work tomorrow and thanks a bunch for the help.
@imd34--good luck, you're doing great so far and the rest is easy....you have rx and ocn to help ya if needed...they stay up later than I do sometimes....:) They've taught me a great deal...!!😴

I rooted my phone last weekend using HTCdev method and flashed the MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012] rom. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

After rooting my battery life dropped to less than 5 hours. I have the SEIDIO 3500mAh battery and could get at least 17 to 18 hr of battery life before. So I was a little disappointed and surprised.

I tried again this Sunday. I restored the nandroid backup and followed the direction again. I did everything like I did the first time with the exception I left it unplugged from the computer. Once again it was really easy. The only difference is my battery life is now better than it was to begin with. It has been unplugged since about 9 am on Sunday now it after 9 on Monday and I still have 20% left on the battery.

The question I have does leaving in plugged into the computer affect anything. Apparently from my results it seems to affect the battery but does it affect anything else. I want to try other ROMS and just don't want to brick my phone for something as simple as not unplugging it.

Welcome and Congrats on rooting/flashing.!
As far as phone plugged in or not when flashing, I have not heard it being bad or good.
However, you said you restored your nandroid backup.
Then you flashed the same downloaded rom, or did you flash a fresh download.
Sometimes the wipe process will clean up things.
Perhaps the next time battery life stinks, go into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache only and that will sometimes clear up wonky things:D

My battery life was shortened the first couple of days after rooting last week. It's getting back to normal now.
Yeah, sometimes it takes a few days for the rom/kernel to settle in but his battery life was less than acceptable...5 hours? geez! :p Especially with a 3500mah battery....blah:puke:

Roms and kernels take time to settle in.

With that being said, if you are experiencing a wake lock no amount if settling is going to fix that.

Im having problems running htcdev.

Error Code: Invalid Bootloader Token Length.
Error Reason: The submitted Token appears to be the wrong length and won't work.

anyone seen this before?

Hello and welcome!
Yes I have, just make sure you are copying everything from the words token start (or something like that) to token end.

I just tried it a couple more times. theres the same about of text. not sure what the problem is
It took me some getting used to when I first did it to "mark" it in the correct spot to copy, it.....:)
If you got your token, just copy it as it is posted on the website, and paste it in the box, but you'll get it. Be sure to include the "<<< >>>>" things:)
I've heard of people using Notepad++ for windows to paste it into that, then copying it from that and then pasting into the box on the website...

okay I finally got it haha. ive got it flashed and everything. still tells me I dont have root access, Is there something else left to do?

there are 3 steps to getting rooted going the HTCdev route. step one is to unlock the bootloader. step 2 is to get recovery. and step 3 is to either flash the su file or flash a custom rom.

you will need to finish all three before you are officially rooted.

I was wondering if the tacoroot method will work the same on Linux Ubuntu and terminal vs. Windows and command prompt? If not, it is not a big deal I can borrow my room mate's computer but I would like to use mine, which is Ubuntu Linux. Thank you!

from what little i know of linux commands, they are slightly different but similar. i unfortunately do not know the exact linux commands to make this work. if earlymon is available, he would be the man for it. i'll see if i can pm him and see.

In terms of the actual root process, there is no difference in how your battery performs afterward whether your phone is plugged in during the root or not. It's suggested in fact that you do have your phone plugged in during the time your doing it to ensure that your battery doesn't die in the middle of it. The biggest problem with how your battery life differs is with the battery stats. When you go from say gingerbread to ics, obviously there is a difference in how much is used as I've is a higher performance rom, but the difference shouldn't be hours in the double digit range. You need to go into your advanced settings in recovery, wipe the battery stats, then fully charge the battery, and then let it get as close to completely dead as you possibly can without it shutting of before you charge it again. Now this is not resetting any kind of "memory" in the battery or anything the way some people have thought..it actually has no effect on the life of the battery whatsoever. It simply resets the usage stats and lessens the possibility that you're showing that your battery is dead when you really still have 20 percent charge left on it.
