Root [ROM][WIP] BACKside ROM (CM7) + Green Machine Theme

Well he did say he wouldnt be doing any updates till he find a fix for the security flaw or something like that lol

I think he's trying to do this for CM7 for all phones-that security flaw... I mean it is important to have a download prompt in a web browser. That reminds me, I use GC all the time and that doesn't have a download prompt....hmmm I wonder if there's an add-on.

Do Android browers suffer from flyby silent auto installs like Windows browsers (they have download prompts too, but they don't pop up for those silent installs)? I thought that's what Jerry was referring to. Someone enlighten me?

You are exactly right. I use Dolphin HD, I think it's pretty secure. I reflash my phone too often for it to be a huge issue for me, though.

I thought so but wasn't sure. So in essence, it matters not if the browser itself has a download prompt. Am I correct in this?

I'm pretty sure I'm safe from this bug as all of my surfing is done from my PC (and that's locked down entirely too tight as it is... VirtualBox FTW!).

No Jerry said that it downloads without a prompt--CM7 web browser has no prompt for downloads of any kind, so I'm sure that's what he's trying to add into it.

He said if you see something downloading that you didn't tell the phone to download to pull battery and wipe the phone, a silent download would not happen on a phone if you can see it in the notification bar....(correct me if I'm wrong)

Cookies are downloaded silently...

That's what these things are designed to do.. install silently without your knowledge or consent. For as long as Windows has had this issue it kind of amazes me that the Google Android devs did not ensure this wasn't an issue for us. Although, fixing it may not be as easy as all that either. We'll just have to wait and see what Jerry comes up with.

Haven't read this in it's entirety yet but thought Id share it anyhow (note - this is not a silent download like what we've been discussing):

First known Android drive-by download found - Technolog on msnbc.com

Somewhere I read turning off allowing the installation of apps that do not come from Google Play provides protection. The trojan will silently downolad, but it will not install. Probably one should clear the browser cache and check their downloads directory before turning side loading back on. Titanium backup will give you an error message every time it is started with this setting.

In my opinion, the reason google allowed it is this: Have you ever installed a app from google play website? Ever wonder how it silently downloads and installs on your phone? This exploit is how that happens and works. So, the reason they do not patch it is they use it themselves. Remember how google silently erased infected apps from users phones after malicious software was detected on the market? Again, using this exploit. In short, they would be blocking themselves, and of course that is something they are not going to do. Hope that helps you guys understand my reasoning behind it.

Google Play can easily be whitelisted in much the same way you can whitelist sites to install Extensions for Firefox. I believe their own site for Extensions is hardcoded to accept installs. Not buyin yer theory hehe.

Apologies out of the way, big family hug. Aww.

See, I leave for a little bit and I miss the big family hug...

My wife still uses my old V. It's still running perfect with BackSide. I keep it updated with his new recovery. No complaints from me and most importantly the wife!! ;) Thanks Jerry!!
I've been experimenting with different ROMs on my Atrix. Right now I'm running Jokersax's CM9 flavor. In all honesty I prefer GB. ICS is nice and all but the graphics to me is too tight. No shadowing or feathering of colors. Ok one color. It now has the theme chooser but it keeps freezing my ROM to the point of reflash. But CM9 is cool and getting cooler and I can't wait until Jerry has one ready for the V. ;)

You know what would be cool? An ICS theme for BACKside.
Does that exist??? I know there's one for Harmonia, I'm on it right now, typing. But Harmonia's giving me grief, and I desperately want to switch back to BACKside. But this ICS theme for GB is so cool.... so if BACKside had an ICS theme, that'd definitely be amazing.

If it's a CM7 mdpi theme it will work on any ROM you have

Go here. There are 4 different ICS themes here.

Thanks guys... extremely helpful!!! I'm back on BACKside 0502 CM7.2 with ICS 4.0 theme. Brilliant. The only issue is in the notifications dropdown area, the notification box is black and the text of the notification is black as well, so I can't read the notification I get and all I see is a black box. This happens on all the ICS themes I've tried from CuriousNoob's downloads and from the Market. Trying to figure out how to fix this, and any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks again.
