Root ROOTING For Dummies

hdmi mirroring will not work as yet with gingerbread. you need as kernel to run the mirroring. most kernel devs were able to add support for hdmi mirroring in their kernels for froyo. but because we do not have the source code for the gingerbread kernel, we do not have any custom kernel yet.

nice!!!!! glad you are back on track. now go flash away!

Actually I don't think HDMI will ever work on this version of MikG since it's actually based off the Shift which doesn't have an HDMI port. The kernel might help, though.

So it's kind of a trade off right now, sense 2.1 or HDMI.

ok that is one thing i did not mention is that partitioning your sd card is recommended that you have a card that is at least a class 4 or higher. otherwise your rom and apps might get laggy. i have a patriot 16g class 10 card and it is sweet. i would checkout newegg for them. they always seem to have a sale on that particular card. i got mine on sale for $25.99.

and as far as staying with mikg? i think it is a great rom. but i'm so ocd and a flashaholic that i get bored very easily. so i tend to jump from rom to rom. i might need an intervention soon. lol

Huge +1 on the bigger card.

I used to be that same flashaholic but I fullfilled that hole by designing themes. ;)

I am new to rooting and have Android version 2.3.3 Software # 4.24.651.1 and was wondering if I can root my Evo 4g now? I am a dummy to rooting and need a lot of help.

Currently the bootloader that comes with the 4.24 software is not rootable. Hopefully soon they will find an exploit to allow us permanent root on the new bootloader. Keep checking here for updates. Here is a link to the thread about it.

Edit: Ocn beat me to it again! :)

Its been about a week since I installed my Evo with the MikG 2.4V and i got to say I am in love with it! Thanks ocnbrze and Xtremedays for showing me this ROM. Who ever I show the first thing they say is wow thats so cool! The lag on the phone is a bare minimum. Any ideas or comments for me to keep working with this ROM?

Thanks everyone!

nice glad you like mikg. it is a very solid rom. anything that mik does is amazing. i think now is a good time for you to do some research on kernels. kernels talks with your hardware and your software and directs on how much juice to send to both. it is one way of help out battery life. here is a guide that has terminology that you will need to shop for kernels:[GUIDE]

Thanks so much for all that info! I read most of the kernel starter page and it just kinda flew right over my head. LOL The CFS kernel that is on the top of the page would that be something good to start with? The kernel that I have on my phone is :

2.6.35.10-gc0a661b
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Tue Jun 14 23:58:32 CST 2011

Is this good or bad? I dont know. Which one would you recommend on my evo with the MikG? Thanks so much for your help!

yeah most kernels i use are cfs. and i think netarchy went away from bfs and actually on some builds he incorporated it with the cfs kernel. looks like all netarchy has done is disabling perflock so that we can under and overclock our phone. also he added support to cifs TUN which i think is for VPN (virtual private network). now that we have a custom kernel we can now use setcpu and over and underclock so here is a guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html. you can get the app in the market.

Ya i already got the setcpu downloaded on my phone. The MikG ROM i downloaded did it not come with some custom kernels already installed in the ROM? Would this be the kernel I am suppose to download?

cm6-snap-v7.11 Download md5 9ed1236e28a82766f46c5eea994eac5e

I am just reading about snapturbo. That thing looks scary LOL. Do you have that on your phone?

Thanks BOss

if you are using mikg then the only custom kernel we have as of right now is the golden monkey:[Kernel]Golden Monkey 1.0 (30-July-2011) - xda-developers. the snap kernel is for cm6 which is an aosp rom based off of froyo. it will not work with mikg. there are two types of kernels. one is for aosp roms and the other is for sense roms. so be careful on what you flash.

so for kernels when flashing all you will have to do is wipe dalvik cache and cache and then flash the kernel. just make sure to do nandroid backup before doing so.

Thanks again Chief! Now this kernel your talking about the developer who got it says that there might be some bugs in this. Do you know what type of bugs he's talking about? (I think I asked that question before reading the entire thread LOL I see the bugs people are having mostly with their wifi and 4G) Are there any older more solid kernels available that will work with MikG?

Also when you flash a new kernel you say wipe dalvik cache along with the cache does this take your ROM or your other programs away?

Thanks

not sure i just flashed it a few minutes ago and so far so good. but it really has not been tested very much as the source code for the kernel was released yesterday. but this is just like an alpha or a beta build. better builds are coming. so you can try it or wait up to you, but it is all we have at the moment.

How would you restore the old kernel back onto your phone if this new monkey one doesnt work good? I mean the one that came with the MikG 2.4 is there a way to do that also?

The wifi problem is related to N support. If you router is set to wireless n only you will have problems connecting. Try to change it to g/b. Other than that, that's the only issue I've seen people talk about.

I just saw that they did a little update on the MikG. They got 2.42 now wow. I was wondering if I want to get that ROM on my phone would I have to wipe everything again and install it or is there an easier way to install an update? Thanks guys!

You can make a nandroid, wipe cache and dalvik-cache, then flash it but if you have issues you will either have to restore or wipe everything and reflash. I am going to give wiping cache and dalvik-cache a shot.

Quite a few gave the cache/dalvik a try and it was a no go, but maybe you will be a lucky one. I haven't had time to flash the updated one yet, need to update my theme for it.

A themer's work is never done with all the roms coming out. Even if you concentrate on one you have your work cut out for you. I will try it that way and if it flakes out, wipe and reflash. I will have everything backed up anyway

Yes so true, especially with Mik, since he puts out updates as much as I change my underwear.:D
