Root ROOTING For Dummies

well you can grab amon ra2.3 here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html

I tried downloading the file which it did and when I used it the winrar program it didnt open. It said there was an error with the file. I then downloaded winzip evaluation version and it said the same thing. I got the file from the XDA page. This is the one! Right or wrong?

PC36IMG.zip - MD5SUM: 6dbb98f9cfa35033982c3803d2520466

the files does not need to be extracted or anything like that.
1.download this file:PC36IMG RA 2.3.zip and rename the file to PC36IMG by deleting the"_RA_2.3 part of the name. do not add a ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
2.move the file over to the root of the sd card. and then go to hboot (power off then press and hold power+vol down).
3.hboot should see it and select yes to update.
4.it should do its thing and before you reboot select no to go into recovery
5.make a nandroid backup.
6.select the first three items to backup and then select wimax as well.

you should have at least one nandroid backup with wimax saved onto your computer, just in case something goes wrong and you loose your wimax keys. once they are gone you can't get them back unless you have one backed up in a nandroid.

Thank you so much for your help! I was wondering when you say that make a nandroid backup do you get a option to select this while your installing amon or do you have to do this when your done installing the amon?

Also when you say that you should keep a backup on your computer how exactly would I do that? Which folder do I have to drag on my desktop from the root of the card?

Thanks so much and sorry for so many questions.

ok so after step 4 when you select no to reboot. you would then select recovery. this will take you to your new amon ra 2.3 recovery. in recovery you will select "backup and restore" then select backup and make a nandroid backup. once that is done then reboot.

you can find your nandroid backup on your sd card. it is found in the folder called nandroid. you can then transfer the file over to your computer via usb with your phone select as disk drive.

As a suggestion, make sure you have at least 50% battery before flashing the radios and when you start the process, walk away for a bit.....get a snack or something otherwise you will keep watching waiting for it to finish and it will seem like it takes forever. :)

Yeah...that is an understatement...it is taking forever! ;)

How would I partition the sd card? I am about to put amon ra recovery on here so is partitioning important or better yet what role does it plan on your sd card?

Thanks

Also in this new MiK ROM is everything included kernels, radio etc or do I have to download and install something else with the ROM?

TY

partitioning your card is not necessarily important. but is recommended for big roms that have sense 3.0. mikg is sense 2.1+sense 3.0 meaning it has bits and pieces from both so it is not needed to partition your card. the syn-kingdom rom, the kingdom rewind and other sense 3.0 will need to partition your card.

when you flash a rom you get basically the rom and its kernel. a kernel is needed to run the rom so it is always included. radios will alway stay the same unless you flash to a different one. just be careful if you flash radios as you could loose your wimax keys.

I think I did the backup as it said backup complete. It says build RA-supersonic 2.3. Did I do it right? Now what folders should I transfer over to my desktop?

yep that is it. congrats on an awesome recovery! do not forget to make a nandroid backup.

i would transfer the entire card onto your computer then transfer it back after you partition your card.

Thank you Sir for guiding me through this. As I was in recovery I did go to backup and did the nandroid backup. I was checked the wimax as you said and once I was done I did a reboot. I will transfer my entire sd card to the computer just in case. Is that good enough for the the nandroid backup because I only checked 4 of those things including the wimax. Is there anything else I am missing?

Now the next big step should I flash the Mikg ROM? :) I am a little scared but thats how I was before I did this recovery thing? Any guidance?

Thanks!:)

that is what i checkoff when i make a nandroid so you should be good to go with that.

as far as mikg goes that is a great rom to start out with. but like i said partitioning is not necessary. i'm on the synergy-kingdom 7/22 nightly rom and you definitely have to partition it. but mikg is a great rom.

I installed the mikG and i got to say it looks nice so far! only thing i couldnt find is my hdmi info any idea how i find that? other than that I am going to play with it tomm and check back in later thanks so much!

Well, I decided instead of unrooting I would try flashing a stock ROM (with updated radios) and called into Sprint. We were able to get the phone activated using the **786 reset method. I was unable to do that on Mik (the dialer would lock up but on the stock GB ROM I was able to get access that way.

Now to confirm I am still rooted I just put setcpu on the phone and it confirmed my root status and allowed me to change the speed. :)

IM BACK!!

hdmi mirroring will not work as yet with gingerbread. you need as kernel to run the mirroring. most kernel devs were able to add support for hdmi mirroring in their kernels for froyo. but because we do not have the source code for the gingerbread kernel, we do not have any custom kernel yet.

nice!!!!! glad you are back on track. now go flash away!

So far I am hitting my head saying why did I take so long to put a custom ROM on my phone. I really like MikG. Its smooth and it looks so awesome! The amazing thing was that I got all my older apps back through titinium backup pro.

Whats the difference between this ROM and the Gingerbread ROM thats available. I can only think of this having way more features than the GB. You guys will know better about this then me.

Also in my sd card folder should I make a seperate folder for all the ROMS and keep them there or should I just delete them?

Thanks

ok so as far as what is different with mikg well the best way is to check out the change log that is out. it lists all of the things that are in the rom. checkout the op on the xda thread:[ROM] - [MikRoms] - [7/19/2011] - MikG v2.4 - Re-Engineered GB Sense 2.1 + 3.0 - xda-developers. it is just too many to list. if you want more another good one is synergy rom. it also like mig has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 cooked in. for me i'm digging the sense 3.0 right now. it is the same sense that you can find in the evo 3d. it is like i already did my sprint upgrade without buying a new phone. that one you definitely need to partition your card.

Okay so can you tell me whats the easiest way to partition your ROM? Any guide on how to do? Is it pretty difficult? Is this the synergy ROM your talking about?

[ROM] Synergy - [RC2 07/17/2011] - The Result Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts
[ROM] Synergy - [RC2 07/17/2011] - The Result Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts - xda-developers

Thanks!

ok so here is the guide i used:[GUIDE][07/07/11]How to Partition your SD Card - xda-developers to partition my card. works great.

that one is the synergy rom. it is pretty good actaully. it is supposed to have some good tweaks that helps save battery life.

but if you want to try the syn-kingdom rom here is the link:║▌ ║▌││░ | ROM | JUL 16| Synergy-Kingdom | NIGHTLYS | 2.3.3 | SENSE 3.0 |░ █║▌ ║ - xda-developers. now it is a nightly so some things may not work. the lastes one is 7/22 and i must say it is the most stable one so far. i have not come across any issues other than some market apps will not download for some reason. other than that this thing is sweet. i can't wait for the next nightly. now as far as updating it, i'm not sure as i have been jumping around lately so not sure. i would recommend a full wipe when updating anyways.

Hey thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly on everything and answering all my questions! I think I will keep MikG for some time before I decide to change my ROM what do you think? I am new to all this so I might not be able to swallow if I see how good that ROM is. So maybe I should build up the hype. Do you recommend I get a bigger sd card if so which one should I get? As always Thanks so much!

ok that is one thing i did not mention is that partitioning your sd card is recommended that you have a card that is at least a class 4 or higher. otherwise your rom and apps might get laggy. i have a patriot 16g class 10 card and it is sweet. i would checkout newegg for them. they always seem to have a sale on that particular card. i got mine on sale for $25.99.

and as far as staying with mikg? i think it is a great rom. but i'm so ocd and a flashaholic that i get bored very easily. so i tend to jump from rom to rom. i might need an intervention soon. lol

Do you think that this card would work? I couldnt find anything on newegg which was above 4-6

TOPRAM 16GB Class 10 MicroSDHC Card 16G C10 MicroSD SDHC with SD Adapter and R10B Micro USB Flash Card Reader / Writer.

Thanks!
