ok so unfortunately you may need to downgrade your clockwork mod to 2.6 to flash the s-on tool. the script for the s-on tool is in amend which clockwork mod 3.0.0.5 does not support. you can grab the file and instructions here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html once you have clockwork mod 2.6 then you can the flash the s-on tool

I am at this step in the rooting process:

Follow the instructions as they appear in the lower portion of the window.

ClockworkMod Recovery
V3.0.0.5

Hey Guys,

I Just wanted to post the specs of my phone and ask you what I need to download and what is good so far. If you can please look and tell me, id appreciate it.

well if you are talking about roms, then i would start by trying out mikg2.3. really smooth and very stable. you can grab it on the rom/kernel sticky.

I would also switch your recovery to CWM 2.6.0.1 or Amon RA 2.3(my preference) as 3.0.0.5 will NOT flash some zip files. The 2 recoveries I listed support both amend and edify scripts while 3.0.0.5 only supports Edify and alot of things are not written in Edify yet.

How would I be able to change my clockworkmod to the Amon recovery? Is it simple or do i have to reset my phone and all? Thanks a ton!

well you can grab amon ra2.3 here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html
1.download the file
2.rename the the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add a ".zip" as windows hides extensions
3.transfer the file over to the root(no folders) of the sd card.
4.power off and then press and hold power+vol down
5.hboot should see it and select yes to update
6. select no not to reboot
7.select recovery
8.select "backup and restore" and select backup
9.always keep the three that are already x'd for you and make at least this one with wimax checked. (you should always have at least one nandroid with wimax backed up. you do not always have to backup wimax. just keep one on your computer.)
10.once a nandroid backup is made then you can reboot.

So I rooted my EVO last night after having it for about a year, and I have to say I'm impressed, and very overwhelmed, by the different options available to me now.

I downloaded and purchased Titanium Backup Pro, and it's currently doing it's thing uploading to my new Dropbox account; but while it's doing that I'm trying to figure out what else I can do.

I am still on the original stock rom, and I am not convinced that I want to change it. (at this time) However, I do think I want to update to a better "Kernel." (I don't even know what this means. To me a "Kernel" is something you eat on corn). Basically, I know it's something that will be able to adjust my under/over clocking of my gpu, but I am curious as to if it will change anything at all in regards to how my UI looks and feels? I like my stock 4g, wifi, and bluetooth buttons. Will those be affected?

Can I use this kernel on my stock rom, and it is recommended- SBC for Netarchy's 4.2.2.?

I have thousands of questions, and I would appreciate a "coach" along the way if it isn't too much trouble. I know we need to "read," "read," and "read" some more in regards to learning this stuff, but I get lost at NAND and Kernel, etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mac

ok first off if your on froyo your so behind the times. we now have gingerbread and though the official ota was very disappointing we have some very exciting new roms. with the ota sense was not updated, but with the many new roms that are out we have a combo sense of 2.1 and 3.0 roms and we have sense 3.0 roms now. they are amazing first of all. and you can get pretty much the same os that is on the evo3d without having to upgrade (of course minus the dual core processor).

however we only have the stock kernel to play with at the moment. we are waiting for htc to release the source code for the kernel. when that happens then we will have custom kernels.

as far as what is a kernel. it is basically a go between your phone hardware and the software on your phone. it directs the flow of power to and from between the two. thus depending on the kernel can help with your batter life. here is a great guide with terminology that you will need to shop for the right kernel:[GUIDE]

Should I stick with the gingerbread update or should I go more custom? I think ocnbrze suggested mikg2.3 if I am not mistaken. Is it pretty easy to put a new custom Rom on the phone? I have never done it before so I am just a little hesitant. Any help or advise? I have read the rooting for dummies almost cover to cover. Thank you so much!

ok so i would recommend the mikg2.4(new release just dropped the other day) basically go to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html sticky and
1.download the file
2.transfer the file over to your sd card.
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup first (they are your friend)
5.wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select "install .zip from sd card"
7.reboot

now the first boot will take a bit longer as it has to build dalvik cache so be patient.

hope that helps.

Actually now there's 2.41, amikam is a machine!

I would also add to the wiping system/boot, basically wipe everything EXCEPT sdcard with Amon_RA

Hey Guys,
I understand that with the OTA update I wont be able to root just yet. Because of the S-On.. But my question to you all is. With Gingerbread it looks like Android has moved from Bluetooth 2.0 to 3.0 (I think) and with the upgrade the Bluetooth no longer works in my car the way it used to. Does anybody know if there is a way for me to tell with any new roms what version of Bluetooth they are using?.. Also if not do the Froyo Roms have the new Bluetooth in them.. THis functionality is very very important to me. Thanks in advance for your help..

Ok so my phone arrived and I am trying to switch my service to it. I did the ESN swap through the web site. It says since the phone was previously used on the Sprint network there are all these steps I have to do to put my number on the phone. I cannot seem to make them work. The phone did not update when it contacted the network so I need to do the "one touch programming". These are the steps"

At the Home screen, press Menu then tap Settings
Flick up then tap System updates
Tap Update Profile
You will see the message Device Configuration - The network is preparing your service. Please wait. Do not interrupt this process. If the screen goes into sleep mode, you may tap the screen to wake up the phone. Do not hold down the End key, as it will interrupt the process.
Once completed, the phone will return to the Settings tab
Press the Home key

Here is the problem, the phone I bought runs cyanmogen7...I have zero experience with this. When I go into settings there is no tab for system updates so I cannot update the PRL and profile. (There has to be a way, I just cant find it cause I is a NEWB)

So I guess I am asking either where can I do this in this ROM or is there another way to activate this quickly. Would it behoove me maybe to load up MikG on the phone and do it from there since that is a GB Sense based ROM and the one I plan to flash anyways?

As per usual, thanks in advance for all the help :)

in aosp roms you can't update prl or profile. you would have to flash to a sense rom to do it. so if you plan on flashing to mikg anyways, you might as well wait and do it when you flash it.
