Root ROOTING For Dummies

I wasn't sure where to find the unrEVOked version. Rooted it last year. My Question: What more can I do or add to my phone. I understand that cyanogen is popular. Are there any updates I need? Thanks.

ok so your question is kind of vague. what are you looking for? if it is roms then there are a bunch of amazing roms out there now that have sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 which will never come to the evo officially. cm7 and miui just released new versions. mikg, sysnergy, kings alliance, and virus's kingdom rom are amazing sense roms that incorporate sense 2.1 and sense 3.0.

From Matlock's great tutorial on How to Root do I need another guide to go from here or just read more - I've been lucky and not bricked the phone yet. If I wasn't so ignorant I wouldn't be asking. When I reboot my phone into recovery I get a prompt, "Do I want to update", then "Do I want to Reboot" - I answer no to both questions. Do you know how to make it go away? Thanks.:D
 
ok so checkout the roms/kernel sticky. it has a list of roms that are currently out. the latest craze are the new sense roms. our beloved evo only has sense 1.0, while the amazing devs have cooked up a way where we can get sense 2.1 and even sense 3.0 in them. there are also aosp roms (android open source project) that have sense removed and is pure android, nothing htc or sprint in them. they do need a little more tweaking then sense roms. some people like it; some do not. it is a matter of preference.

ok so on that note here is the breakdown on how to flash a rom:
1.find the rom of your choice and download it and transfer it to your sd card.
2.go into your recovery and select "backup and restore" and make a nandroid backup
3.select "wipe cache partitions"
4.select "adavnced" and select "wipe dalvik cache"
5.select "wipe data/factory reset"
6.do this three times (i'm guessing you have clockwork mod recovery. cwm just does not wipe very well. more on that later)
7.select "install .zip from sdcard"
8.find and select your rom file
9.it will then install your rom.
10.reboot.

ok now the first boot will take awhile as it has to build up dalvik cache so be patient.

a note on clockwork mod recovery: most of us use amon ra2.3 recovery. it is more reliable and wipes better then cwm. here is where you can get it:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html. it also has instructions. if you have any moere questions please feel free to ask.

edit: ok so i did not see your edit of your post, but to get rid of those messages you can go to phone settings/software update and uncheck the "schedulre check" box
 
This is for anyone stuck with the 2.3.3 update.

This morning I called Sprint tech support. I explained how unhappy I was with the update and that I had my phone replaced 2 weeks ago and didn't accept the ota on my original. I asked if it was possible for a corporate repair center to roll my phone back to 2.2....YES! I live in LA so the stores aren't open yet but I'll be heading out in about an hour so I'm there once they open. Tech support created a ticket and noted my account so I shouldn't have a problem when I get there. I seriously hope this works!!!!!! I'll report back.

Doesn't work. Don't bother. :(
 
I just got an EVO 4G and I'm trying to root it. I had an Incredible a while back and I used unrevoked, but I went onto their website looking to use it for my EVO... the site says 403-FORBIDDEN when I click the download button. Any help appreciated.

yeah, that is what i was thinking. good try though. i was crossing my fingers though. oh well, just be patient. the root will come at somepoint. i believe our last update took over a month or so for we had an exploit.

do you have the gingerbread 2.3.3 update? if so you will have to wait. if you still have froyo 2.2 then you should be able to download it fromthere website. try this link:unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool, v3.32

Its the Hboot of course. When the tech came out to tell me he couldn't get it to work he was so excited thinking it would work. Any one in the Commerce area of Los Angeles, They are pro root! He and the girl that helped me when I first walked in knew why I wanted to go back to 2.2 :p
 
Before switching to Amon Ra I did a few backups with Clockwork which I obviously don't need anymore. What folder would they be in so I can delete them? They are taking up needed space :). Thanks!

it has been awhile since i was on clockwork mod but i think the folder is clockwork/backup/the nandroids are saved with the dates as their names.
 
Ok I got a serious problem here. It would appear that my power button has stopped functioning. I dont know how it happened, but if I press it nothing happens I cant even restart the phone! Nothing has helped, even a battery pull.

This leaves me with no choice but to unroot my phone and take it in. Now I know there is threads for that and I will get to them but I am guessing I will need to restart my phone and get it into recovery to be able to do it. (or if there is any fix that doesnt require me to take it in I would still need to be able to do that) So how can I get into recovery without being able to use the power button?

I wont lie I am in total freakout mode right now :(

edit to add: I just called the Sprint store and they said I can bring it in and they will take care of it. I am skeptical because I am not the biggest truster of Sprint...but at this point I have no other choice I gotta trust them. Cross your fingers guys!!

Knowing my luck, they wont be able to fix it and they will give me a replacement with GB 2.3 so I cant root ;)

I saw that actually and I am downloading the file now...figure it is worth a try. :)

It would suck if my phone was replaced...even though it had some flaws (like apps randomly disappearing when the phone was restarted) Mik 2.2 was just a wonderful ROM. But having a working phone is most important :)

edit to add: From what I can tell it worked! Phone appears to be back on stock 2.2 and looking good! Time to bring it in and get this sucker fixed :)

What is funny is that it is so irrational I feel that way...I literally just got a brand new white evo (to replace my white evo) that appears to work flawlessly and yet I want my old phone back. I miss Mik 2.2 especially the Sense update. I was gonna get a custom boot animation (one of the guys on mikmik was making it for me) and a new lock ring and batter indicator *sigh* I told my buddy if I can find an Evo with 2.2 on it on Ebay I will sell my new white one and buy that one just so I can root! (I was half kidding)

Oh well I will just have to wait, maybe the exploit is coming soon.

The new Sense is just so great...I mean having all of my network options (amongst others) on the notification menu is just so brilliant and convenient! Plus the lock screen with the live weather was just outstanding!

But noooooooooo...here I am stuck with a mic that doesnt work right (when I was rooted with GB it didnt either but rooted with Froyo it was perfect) a widgetlocker screen and no ability to cusstomize minus using ADW or LP which means I lose my google calendar.

Oh well, the smart people will crack it, then I will have my school colors in my boot animation and the "Ring of Mordor" as my lock ring! Serenity now serenity NOW!!!!

You nerd to go to miks message board (linked in the thread for his rom...mikmik.com I think) and it is in the mods section in a thread about lock rings :)
