Root ROOTING For Dummies

I have looked there as well, While there is alot of information available, I do not understand any of it :/ I am not exactly tech-savy.. But I have made a few post around there as well, Thank you for your help and welcome :)

Is there an updated unrevoked for the new phones coming out yet? I got a replacement phone a couple of weeks ago and have not been able to root it, so I am taking it that my unrevoked is too out of date, but I downloaded one when I got the phone. Thanks in advance guys. Oh yeah the message that I am getting is "is your device too new" or something like that.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah i hear that the new phones are coming out with the gingerbread update (2.3.3) already loaded on the phone. so check your software version as well as your hboot (power off the press and hold power+vol down). if your hboot is 2.16 then you will have to wait until a new exploit is found for that hboot.

Please help me!!!!! I can"t root my evo!!!!! I used to have it rooted then returned to stock. Now i"m stuck and unrevoked wont work!! Please text or call me!!!! My name is chaz 407 xxx xxxx thanks!!!!!!!!

Did you accept the recent OTA update? If so, you likely now have a new hboot(2.16) that is not yet supported by unrevoked. They are trying to find an exploit to allow us to root it but have not found one as of yet. Why did you unroot?

Chaz, I removed your number. We'll get you through this while keeping your anonymity intact.

any update as to if unrevook supports sprints stock upgrade to 2.3?

nope not yet. keep checking here on this forum. you will know when it is rooted. there will be a sticky on the how to's and you will see many posts about for sure. this place will blow up as soon as the exploit is found.

Ok I am new to the idea of rooting, and I read the Rooting for Dummies (and I think I understand it) I have a couple of questions. I am sure they will make you roll your eyes but know I appreciate this greatly.

So I have been doing some reading the last few days and I am intrigued by the new mik ROM that includes the new Sense. Now I plan to root on Thursday, after I have done all of the steps and have rooted can I then flash the new mik ROM (after of course doing a Nandroid) straight away or do I have to flash an older ROM first. I guess what I am asking is it:

Step 1) root phone
Step 2) flash mik
Step 3) ???
Step 4) profit/bacon

:D

Do these ROMs have any effect on the signal strength of the phone? To put it lightly the last few months my cell service has been spotty in some areas and I don't want to do anything that will make it worse.

I see a lot of talk about flashing radios...some say it is super important to flash new radios, some say it is dangerous and some say it is unnecessary. Well I will be coming from stock 2.2 when I root will it be needed? And what exactly is the PRI? (it seems with the new mik ROM you need to flash to 1.77 which makes zero sense to me since I have no idea what it means :D )

Like I said, I am a rooting noob to the Nth degree. I know one person who is rooted and he paid someone to do it but me I trust no one with my phone but me. I plan to read the guide again before I root and will obviously read as I root so hopefully even I can't screw it up :)

Thanks!

ok before we go on, did you accept the gingerbread ota? if you did, then you will have to wait until an exploit i found. anytime there is an ota like gingerbread 2.3.3, they usually add a new hboot(2.16). when that happens a new exploit needs to be found. so until a new one is found nobody can root the new hboot.

I have not upgraded to GB. I am running Froyo 2.2.

ok sweet. so then you are on the right track. so:
1.root phone
2.make a nandroid backup
3.wipe dlavik cache, cache, and data
4.use vr superwipe(but you will have to switch recoveries to amon ra 2.3). this just wipe 3x to make a really clean environment for your new rom.
5.flash mikg

like i said in step 4 you should consider switching recoveries amon ra 2.3 is a much better recovery then clockwork mod (most of us use it on this forum)
you can get the recovery here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html

Ok, I will do all that (including Amon Ra since that seems to be the one everyone likes best) and will report back. Will either be tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks!

I just want to add to what OCN said, don't use the superwipes as crunches, IMO you don't need it and sometimes they miss things. Especially if you use Amon_RA to wipe, it does a great job and only takes like 30 secs to do. In AmonRa wipe everything EXCEPT SD Card, you can wipe it more than once but I don't and haven't ever had an issue, and then flash MikG.

BTW Welcome to MikG!

yeah i agree. i use vr superwipe in addition to manually wiping. some people even wipe manually three times and use either vr superwipe or calkulin's format all three times as well before they flash. main thing is you can never be to clean.

Yeah..Some people are wipaholics and flashaholics :D Me I'm just a flashaholic. :p

EDIT:As they say, to each there own and do whatever works for you!

Here's how it'll happen...

I get my Evo Friday, making sure to tell the person helping me doesn't update to the 2.3.3.. I get home, root my phone and install the rooted 2.3.3....

After firing it up, get the Titanium Back Up and other apps I need including the tether app... Tether using my kick ass 4G which I live in the center of a 4G area. I'll check my posts and find that they got the new root figured out for the stock 2.3.3.....

I'll be a little sad, BUT I'LL STILL HAVE A KICK ASS EVO!!!!! lol

i tried rooting my phone last night, it did not work. i did not read through the end of the forum, but what i am getting is that if you did the software update to android 2.3.3 you have to wait for a new version of unrevoked?

yep you are correct. you unfortunately will have to wait. as of right now there is no new exploit yet for the new hboot. i took the last ota about a months or so for the exploit to be found.

Not trying to burst your bubble but alot of the Evos coming out right now have 2.3 already installed with the new hboot so you may be stuck with it for a bit longer. You might get lucky but all I have heard about are coming with the latest OTA already.

So I rooted with unrevoked and seems to be working well but I have a question...I can't seem to get Amon Ra to work. Can anyone give me a ridiculously dumbed down set of instructions on how to get it and use it. I don't want to flash a rom until I nandroid correctly and I have been reading enough to be biased against clockwork ;)

nice on amon ra. so here is the file you need:PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
1.download it and rename the file. just delete the"_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only "PC36IMG". do not add a .zip to the name as wondows hides extensions.
2.transfer the file to the root(no folder) of the sd card
3.power off then press and hold power+vol down
4.hboot should scan for the file
5.if it is named correctly and it is placed on the root of the card, hboot will see it.
6.select yes to update.
7.select no to reboot so you can go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
8.select "backup and restore"
9.select or keep the first three selected and also select wimax
10.select backup and amon ra will make a nandroid backup
reboot and you are good to go.

Go friggen figure... They had some pre-2.3.3 phones in the back and I didn't check.... Shaking so bad over the excitement... Got home, readied the install and double checked the version.... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2.3.3

Got pda net working so I have net, guess I have to wait to install Synergy.....

I would just like to thank everyone in this thread for their help! Special thanks to ocnbrze for his help with Amon Ra! I got rooted and flashed Mik 2.2 which is amazing!!

For anyone that is worried about rooting, the whole thing took me about an hour and twenty minutes of that was wasted in a brain fart I had. Unrevoked does almost all the work for you and the rest is just drag and drop and pressing buttons. If I can do it anyone can!

Thanks again! :)
