Root ROOTING For Dummies

Glad this is a forum for "dummies".

I have watched the Unrevoked Youtube video, I have read through the forums but am unable to get the boot screen (holding the volume down and power button) on my Evo.

version 2.2.3
build 4.24

Any suggestions as to where I can find a step by step for "idiots" since the "dummy" method does not seem to sink in.....

Thanks.

Well you should be able to do it...are you having issues with the buttons at all in general? What happens when you try to turn on the phone in this way? Does it boot regularly or not at all?

Welcome to the forums...these guys will get you there they did for me and i am the epitome of "dummy" on this stuff :D

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
unfortunately you will have to wait to root your phone. there is no current root method yet for those who have gingerbread ota on your phone.

however you can still get to hboot by first going to settings/applications/then uncheck fast boot. now you should be able to get to the hboot screen.

2.2.3 is GB? I figured since it was "2.2" instead of "2.3" it was still Froyo. On my new Evo the version is "2.3.3".

See I told you I was a dummy ;)

well i'm just assuming because i do not think that froyo was 2.2.3. it was just 2.2. and the build matches with what our current software would be which is 4.24. so i think it was a typo. but i was only assuming so i could be completely wrong. so do set the record straight if you go to settings and about phone and software, your software number and your android version. if it is 4.24.651.1 and and your android version is 2.3.3, then you will have to wait. if it is android 2.2 then you are on froyo and you can still root your phone.

I assume you know you need to use M10 tools to decomp/recomp the lock rings, right?

Or you can go that route and use those. Mando41 has done some great ones.

Here's a link.

Lockrings.

Lol of course :). I had found one but I was editing the m10 to remove the developers name for myself then porting but this made life easier so I thought...

I tried flashing over synergy and it doesn't work, I'll have to port it anyhow. Ugh. Least I don't have to edit the m10 though.

Thats exactly what I have.
software 2.2.3
build 4.24.651.1

How do I stop the phone from doing any updates?

I am not comfortable with the fact that I have no control over my phone. I should be able to decide what/when/if I want an update.
Whats with the "update" anyway? Is it just there to keep people from rooting their phones or is there a vital need to have it?

Is there a way to downgrade my version/build to one that will let me root?

What about this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwNfnlsDkKg

or this?

Yea I kind of figured you did. :D

I haven't dug into the m10 yet, I've got it downloaded, just haven't set it up yet. That guy does some pretty good stuff with the rings, so I just let him do his thing and use them. ;)

Enjoy.

I think you should be able to use this guide to root your phone. It looks like your software hasn't been updated yet.

Okay i understand there is a lot of trouble rooting once gingerbread is installed... i failed to read the forum questions in the excitement of rooting my phone... but now i see why i could not root, i think... is there a simple way to downgrade back to froyo or is there another way to root from gingerbread already

I followed all of the steps carefully, tried setting from "charge only" to "disk drive" and repeatedly factory reset my phone in hopes it would root... but no luck

its frustrating thinking that i deleted all of my apps and contacts for no reason (all backed up, but still an annoying hassle)

PLEASE HELP :(

wats up people.........ok i am tryn to root my evo which by the way i just got back from sprint so it has the latest software and everything and when i went to do the painless root and reflash it said fail to get root and "Is your firmware too new........now i did this before with my old evo and it worked fine so i think it might be the software but idk.....

In the video (root gingerbread) that I posted above the user said that he "downgraded" his phone.

1) How did he do this ?
and
2) is there any benefit to keeping the gingerbread on the phone?

There currently is no way to downgrade your phone without root access. There is also no current root for the new hboot(2.16). They are working to find it but unfortunately they have not yet released any information about it. Be patient and keep checking back here. You will know when they find the exploit and get us full root again on the new hboot.

As far as the video, I have not yet watched it but even Sprint tech has not been able to downgrade the hboot version on an unrooted phone to my knowledge. HTC might be able to but that information has not been released to my knowledge. The latest release has a few perks to it but not what should have been included. Battery life seems to be better for most people and there were a few minor fixes in it.

DO NOT ADD A SPACE BEFORE THE LAST mtd0 or after just a tip i found after googleing and it then worked for me thought i would save u some time and also u might want to take it out of the directions

Is there a root for gingerbread? I have gingerbread but my baseband version is 2.16..can I still root the phone? If I do try to root the phone will I lose all my pics and files?

if you have gingerbread 2.3.3 on your phone then you will have to wait until there is an exploit found for your current hboot(2.16). just stay tuned here. you will know. we will have a sticky explaining how to root your phone.

I am jonsing so bad to root my Evo that I spent half the day on Ebay looking for rooted Evos I could buy on the cheap so I could switch it out and sell my Gingerbread one. (which is in mint condition) I think I have a problem ;)

I wont lie, it helps that I most likely would make a profit on the deal as well :)

So have I. I'm looking at all of em. One Guy didn't respond in time and I won the auction (totally my fault) and its on gingerbread. Sorry pal. I don't need it. My phone is 22 days old running the same software. Ugh

When I run Unrevoked, I get Failed to get root: is your firmware too new?

I tried a Factory reset and then ran unrevoked again and I got the same message. So I did another factory reset...and yet again I got the same message.

Can anyone help me get my HTC Evo rooted? I just did the software upgrade a few weeks ago.

Thanks!

If you did the software update to Gingerbread 2.3.3 then you will not be able to root until an exploit is figured out by the Devs.

Welcome to the forums :)

Anyone know if there's an Odexed OTA available for the July 10 or 11 Gingerbread update yet? I looked over at xda and couldn't tell if there was ONLy an OTA; most were ROMS and I just want the update...

what update was that? i have not heard of another update? as far as i know the current software out is 4.24.651.1. which is on the rom/kernel sticky

when i have dopne all these steps i stall at the unrevoked bit where it sais waiting for device i turn usb debugging on and it changed to device (marvel) not recognised and i dnt no for the life off me what to do i followed everystep before hand and everything went ok no errors except the 1 i mentioned

do you have an evo or a wildfire s? if so i moved your thread over to their section.

but looks like the process is very similar. so have you tried to install then unistall htc sync? turn off any antivirus programs on your pc and your phone. did you install the hboot drivers? and did you get the the "android 1.0" when you update the drivers?
