Root ROOTING For Dummies

Ok so my phone arrived and I am trying to switch my service to it. I did the ESN swap through the web site. It says since the phone was previously used on the Sprint network there are all these steps I have to do to put my number on the phone. I cannot seem to make them work. The phone did not update when it contacted the network so I need to do the "one touch programming". These are the steps"

At the Home screen, press Menu then tap Settings
Flick up then tap System updates
Tap Update Profile
You will see the message Device Configuration - The network is preparing your service. Please wait. Do not interrupt this process. If the screen goes into sleep mode, you may tap the screen to wake up the phone. Do not hold down the End key, as it will interrupt the process.
Once completed, the phone will return to the Settings tab
Press the Home key

Here is the problem, the phone I bought runs cyanmogen7...I have zero experience with this. When I go into settings there is no tab for system updates so I cannot update the PRL and profile. (There has to be a way, I just cant find it cause I is a NEWB)

So I guess I am asking either where can I do this in this ROM or is there another way to activate this quickly. Would it behoove me maybe to load up MikG on the phone and do it from there since that is a GB Sense based ROM and the one I plan to flash anyways?

As per usual, thanks in advance for all the help :)

I'd call sprint anyway to make sure it's programmed correctly. Also have them do a refresh on it and send another activation code to it I've spent the last 2 day not being able to make calls and send text messages. My phone was used by someone else too. I had to call twice about this. Its been 24 hours and no problems.

Ok I flashed MikG 2.41 and got it all loaded after doing a full wipe including cache and dalvick,, switched the ESN and have been trying to activate the phone but it wont do it. The phone will not update the profile or the PRL. I have tried a half dozen times to no avail I either get a roaming warning (I am not currently in roaming) or an error 1012.

Do you think I need to flash a stock ROM in order to get this to work right? No matter what I do I cannot get this phone to connect to the network to switch the profile over.

i do not think so. as long as you are on sense you are ok. however, i've never done that so i'm not sure what you would need to do. you may have to call sprint and have them do it. as long as you are on sense then they should be able to do it over the phone, i believe.

I did...they tried everything (all the ## codes) and none of them worked. The tech person said I need to go into a Sprint store to have them do it and intimated she thought the phone was rooted.

I am not going to lie this is kinda getting on my nerves ;)

Everything else works great so it isnt the ROM. (which btw is super awesome...man I missed Mik)

I have no idea on the radios...I dont even know how to check :/

I thought I might need to flash radios but I wont lie, that kind of scares me since it seems to be the way to screw up the phone.

you can either go to your hboot screen. it will tell you what your radio is or you can go to settings/about phone/software version/ and your radio should be there. it is pretty easy all you do is flash the radio like you would a rom. just wipe dalvik cache and cache (not even sure that wiping is necessary).

Radios are 2.15.00.11.19 if I am reading the hboot correctly. Should I update that ya think and if so you got a link?

You are awesome btw :)

Sorry to jump in here, but you might need to unroot to get your phone recognized on the network. I bet if you unroot and try to update it all through the network it will get changed over. Obviously be sure not to accept the OTA. Then re-root and flash MikG.

Be very careful flashing the radios, basically the only sure fire way to brick your phone if you bork that.

Ok I downloaded them and will flash them later. I have to go be social for a while :)

thanks again for all the help!

As a suggestion, make sure you have at least 50% battery before flashing the radios and when you start the process, walk away for a bit.....get a snack or something otherwise you will keep watching waiting for it to finish and it will seem like it takes forever. :)

This may be a dumb question, but if I update the radios but have to unroot will that cause any issues with the phone at all? I would guess not but just covering my bases. :)

You can always downgrade the radios before unrooting. The only issue may be the RUU you use to unroot being older than the radios if you go to the ones in the 2.3.3 release.

Actually now there's 2.41, amikam is a machine!

I would also add to the wiping system/boot, basically wipe everything EXEPT sdcard with Amon_RA

What is amikam? And what 2.41 are you talking about? Also one other question is that when you guys mention sense 2.1 - 3.0 what exactly does that do and in this Rom or the mikg 2.4 what sense does that have and what does it do?

Thanks

Aamikam is the dev for MikG and the other Mik roms. MikG has sense 2.1 with 3.0 elements. I am running 2.41 with no issues at all currently. Check here for links to his roms. You will have to register on his web site to download though.

amikam is the dev behind the mikg2.41 rom. it was just released. you can go to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html sticky to get it. pretty good rom to try out.

right now all we have is sense 1.0 on our evos. but, phones like the evo shift and the evo 3d have sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 respectively. so some roms have elements of both sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 cooked into the roms.

some roms are just pure sense 3.0. but, those roms take up a lot of internal space so it is suggested that you partition your card which means that some of the rom and apps are stored on your sd card. with the sense 3.0 you get a 3d carousel home screen and rosie and there are some 3d transitions cooked int as well.

main thing is to check the changelog before flashing a rom. it will tell you all the elements that are in the rom.

Is this the correct one I should be downloading?

I am at work right now and am thinking after I get home I am going to install amon recovery first and then say a prayer before I install the mikg on my phone. For some reason if I wanted to go back to the original ROM i had before putting this new one on I would pick that up from the nandroid backup and then restore it correct? Is there anything else I should do before embarking on this mission? Thanks!

:)

unfortunately your previous nandroids will not work with amon ra. so if you want to go back to a previous nandroid you would have to switch back to clockwork mod again. but amon ra is a much better recovery. i would switch recoveries with your current rom. make a nandroid backup with amon ra. then flash mikg2.41.

It has been awhile since the latest update to hboot 2.16 on the Evo, and STILL no exploit for it found yet? I just got a replacement Evo and immediately updated the phone thinking (stupidly) without checking that I could root it when home by now. But no...no no no no no. When??!!
