Root ROOTING For Dummies

Best to wipe and reinstall with TB I think. I haven't tried it yet.....disappointing update IMO really.

But using TB will make it exactly like it was before TB, right? lol

I just like heavily modded/arranged all my stuff yesterday and then noticed the update lol and i don't want to spend another day doing it again, haha. :)

TB only backs up data and apps. It allows you to reinstall them after flashing to another rom. It is not a good idea to restore system data when going to another rom. If you are happy with your phone the way it is, I would stay with it for a bit. I am running Kings GB R2 which has been out for a couple months now and haven't found anything worth while to stay with yet.

Oh :( So I would have to re-set everything up.

Ugh. How frustrating :)

Searched the thread and didn't appear to see anything about this, but can I restore my data/settings/apps with Nandroid after flashing a new ROM? In my nandroid menu there are checkboxes and one is data, I was wondering if I could do one with only that, flash the ROM and then nandroid restore that backup with data. Would that mess up anything?

Yes that will probably mess a lot of things up, but what the heck give it a shot. Be sure to make backups prior to doing it.

I'm pretty close to 100% sure you will have a lot of issues.

You will get a system down and get to the point where you are done and running in 10 minutes or so. :D

Ha..I don't even bother anymore, I flash so much now, plus make themes and what not.

But he's right. I could get my phone back up and running in about an hour and a half.

not sure what ota stands for >_< however, yes, when I got my phone I installed a "system update" when I look at the "firmware" section it doesn't say froyo or anything like that as i've read in many places is doomed firmware if you're wanting to root, it just says "android version - 2.2.1"
am I correct that rooting and find a suitable kernel is the best way to get the most out of the shabby processor - i.e. games and general use speed up dramatically? as this is all I wish to achieve
Windows - no evidence of any driver, I think I tried installing one and it sent me on a wild goose chase - having to install Java (JDK) or something along those lines

thanks for the speedy reply ocnbrze :D

well our phone just got the official gingerbread OTA (over the air update) which there is no exploit yet for it. so it is good that you have 2.2 still. do not accept the ota whatever you do. you will not be able to root otherwise.

and yes a custome kernel will help with speed and overclocking.

have you read the dummies guide? did you download and installed the android-usb driver? also some have had success with downloading htc sync (go to the htc website) then uninstalling it leaving the driver that it comes with.

how would I uninstall leaving only the driver? please excuse my ignorance

Hmmm, I did mention in my first post that I have a "wildfire with htc sense" does the above still apply?

Should I do the same, but for the wildfire?

well i think the drivers would be different for different phones, but i could be wrong though. i would still try and download from the link i provided above.

ok, so i have installed htc sync, i simply "uninstall" and the driver should remain? or do i need to check a box? i can't see why everything i installed will not be uninstalled?

when you install htc sync it also installs the driver for it as well. however, whenever you uninstall sync, you computer will not uninstall the driver. it stays behind.

:D sorted, i'm ready to root, are you willing to guide me through the process? or is it better i read through "rooting for dummies"?

ok so once you have the drivers. go here and follow directions there. public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]. this will give you the android-usb drivers for unrevoked. once you have those make sure that no anti-virus program is on both your phone and computer and try running unrevoked.

Ok... Problems from the start. I bought a used phone and it appears it has been rooted and returned to stock in the past. 4G works so I assume it is OK.

I had a Dinc and installed Unrevoked on it. I'm not sure what all needs to be removed from my PC to make it work but I deleted the 2 files that I am supposed to download for Unrevoked and redownloaded for Evo 4g. Something tells me this isn't enough.

I do not have HTC Sync installed. When I first plugged the phone into the pc, it recognized a 1.0 android device and "installed drivers".

I booted into hboot (.97 version, I believe) and went to USB Hboot as instructed. I went to properties and instead of saying "Android 1.0 device" is says "unrecognized device". I went through "update driver" as instructed and told it the folder... It says, "Windows cannot find a driver for this device."

This is where my rooting adventure ends.

Ideas?
