Root ROOTING For Dummies

Sorry to butt into this conversation but I could really use some help..

I've been working to root my phone via unrevoked for about 4 hours and been stuck on the same issue for the whole time. The unrevoked process will always get hung up on the "waiting for system to reboot" or "waiting for system to settle" phase. I've tried different PCs and different OSs and nothing seems to work.
I also have all the precautions in place: factory reset phone, no interfering software on my PC, antivirus off...

At one point during the process my computer always makes a noise signaling that the device is being disconnected and then immediately reconnected. I'm assuming this has something to do with it. It may also be that the versions of hboot and android software are not compatible? How can I tell?

I would really appreciate any advice!!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!
so what happens after you get the error? does your phone boot up? i would re-try running it. sometimes it may take a few tries before it takes. if you can, power off then press and hold power+vol down. top left corner of the screen does it say s-off or s-on?

Thanks for responding!
During reboot the phone hovers on the htc evo 4G page for about 20 seconds then continues with its normal reboot. I've attempted it about a dozen times now so its a consistent problem... I don't see either S-on or S-off

Thanks alot Xtreme! What do you think if I install Mikfroyo on my phone you think it would look good?

Mik is good. I ran it for a while and I had it on my wife's phone too til recently. I am running MikG 1.02 right now. It has sense 2.1 with some 3.0 stuff in it and no issues so far other than the stock kernel sucks on battery :)

I'm sure you know that Mik's Roms 4.6x and up are all odexed now and are being themed like crazy.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

Yeah MikG is awesome. He has 1.03 up now...you can just do an update zip if you want what he fixed from .02 to .03...

You have to hold down the volume down button while powering on your phone.

One question, did you get the latest OTA? If so look up about 7-8 posts for a link to a thread at xda I provided.

I am really confused on how to put the PC36IMG on the SD card when trying to unroot the phone. Can someone please help me. My pc doesnt recognize the phone, the sound that it makes when it is connected to it comes but i cant find it on my pc. So how do you put the PC36IMG on there?

Do you have a card reader or another phone you can put the card in to transfer the file?

First why are you trying to unroot. DO NOT unroot just to get the latest OTA, if that is the reason.

I still havent flashed my the new 2.3 update. I am just a little hesitant. I dont want anything to stop working on my phone. If I just install the odex ROM without installing the radios will everything remain the same? Do I have to install anything else to make sure it works flawlessly? Thanks!

you do not have to install the radios if you do not want to. should work just fine with out it. just make sure to make a nandroid backup and flash as you would normally do. to be honest the ota is not all that is was made to be. but go ahead and try it. you can always go back to your nandroid backup.

So i had to send my phone in to sprint to get the charging port issue fixed. I just got a refurbished phone back and would like to see if i can root it again, but i'm not sure if its root compatable or not. Can someone check this and let me know? thanks

Android Version: 2.2
Baseband version: 2.15.00.11.19
Build number: 3.70.651.1
Software number: 3.70.651.1
PRI version: 1.90_003

When you say make a nandroid backup do you do that on the white screen when you press power down and hold the volume key? Also if I dont like the new update you mention I can go back using the nandroid backup. Could you please jot that again on how to do it in case I want to go back. Thanks again!

you should be good to go, but check your hboot(power off then press and hold power+vol down). if your hboot is 2.10 or less then then you are good. but if you have hboot 2.16 then you have to wait for the new exploit to root.

no that white screen is called hboot or bootloader. you need to do that in recovery. so go to hboot and select recovery. i'm guessing that you have clockwork mod 3.0.0.5? select "backup and restore" and backup your rom. now to get back to your nandroid backup, all you have to do is go back to recovery and select "backup and restore" and select restore and find the date of the nandroid backup you want to go back up to. when done in both cases select "reboot system now" to reboot phone.

Thank you Sir! How would I find out which clockwork mod I have on my phone? I am learning and hopefully I will be able to answer questions like you guys!

Check the OP, however if you are just starting to flash I would recommend switching to amon_ra recovery because it's a better recovery, IMO. You can do it two ways and one of them is through ROM manager by scrolling to the bottom and selecting flash alternative recovery and the other is to put a zip in the root of your sd card and boot in to bootloader and update. Everything you need to do that can be found here.

So then what do I do for the new OTA? I tried reading the post in here but it was really confusing.

My phone is, I guess, half-rooted? Because I was just using the Stock Sense. I kinda want the update but don't know what to do to get it.

Also: if i wanted to unroot because I don't use anything rooted anyways, will i lose everything on my phone that I have now? :(

Don't unroot. Go here: [ROM][STOCK] --- Version 4.22.651.2 --- Odexed & De-Odexed --- - xda-developers and download the odex version. Flash that and it will get you the OTA software but keep root.

Sorry, I know this has been answered but couldn't find the answer through the search.

I rooted with clockwork 6 months ago and just updated to the rooted stock GB the other day. I have never had an issue with booting to the hboot screen by using volume down + power. Now when I use the same method, my phone will only start up like normal, no matter how long I hold volume + power. I CAN reboot into recovery through ROM Manager, just wondering why holding down the keys will not work anymore?

Is it because I switched from ClockworkMod to RA? Not a huge deal, am still able to do everything I need to do, I just don't want to always have to go through ROM Manager.

ok so with the latest update, to get to hboot go to phone settings/applications/ uncheck fastboot. you should now be able to get to recovery via hboot.

Lol, thanks for the quick reply. I swear I saw that setting a few hours ago but for some reason didn't even think twice about it until you mentioned it.

Just curious, where does it save the backup? On the phone or memory card? And, how big is the file usually?
