Root ROOTING For Dummies

No actually several things are strange its seems like I'm losing some apps that came with the rom. Don't have a file explorer so I cant even try that unless I mount the sd card and put it on that way. I'm backing up my sd card as we speak and going to format and reinstall. Do you have any experience or could you point me in a direction to learn about A2sd partitioning. I tried it through the recovery and it seemed to work but do you have to manually move things to the card once you boot up. By the way thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

Dark Tremor A2SD is the one I use. It moves things automatically on install and from them on. Froyo apps2sd comes stock with 2.2(not sure about 2.3 yet) and only moves part of the app to android secure on the sdcard. DT A2SD moves the whole app to the card and uses a symlink to tell the OS where to find it. If you are going to use DT A2SD you will want to get a class6 or higher sdcard. The stock card may not be fast enough to use. I do not have a link for DT at the moment. If you search xda for darktremor, you should find the thread about it.

I'm having trouble with step 9-11 in the unrooting. I got to the point where I am at S-On. But I'm a little confused, am I suppose to connect the USB while it's in Recovery mode and then drop the PC36IMG into the ROOT? If so, it's not an option for me.

I can drop the PC36IMG into the SD and THEN go into Recovery mode, but what about after that? Should I just hit the apply from SD Card option for that Zip file?

The PC36IMG file is flashed in hboot not recovery. It needs to be placed on the root of the card renamed exactly PC36IMG(don't add zip if you are using Windows), power off the phone, then hold volume down+power til the white hboot screen comes on. Let it find the file then up volume to update.

Why are you unrooting?

Thanks again, I'll look into it.

Sorry kind of late to the party here but here's a guide for A2SD specifically geared toward mik roms.

Also you could try this for your market issues.

Is there any specific reason you are using A2SD? Reason I ask is because I tried it and really didn't care for it, seemed a little slower opening apps for me and I don't have a lot so didn't really have a need for it. If you have a lot of apps then it's definitely worth it.

Hey guys, I am new to this whole website and I heard about rooting a while back, and am finally deciding to get my phone rooted. I have read and followed all of the instructions, but every single time I'm in the process of rooting, unevoked brings up an error message saying my firmware is too new. I was hoping one of you all could help me resolve this issue, as I've looked into other peoples solutions for it but none have worked for me.

Did you get the latest OTA from sprint?

What's your hboot version?

Yeah, I updated and have 2.3.3 and I think hboot is 2.16.0001

HMM..Man I'm not sure you might punch in your hboot version in google and see if it can be rooted. I've read that it was rumored the new OTA may have bootloader locked down.

Not sure if there is a way around that, some of the other guys might know. I'll do some digging in the meantime as well.

Unrevoked does not work on that hboot as of yet. There are rumored ways to downgrade to Eclair (2.1) then root but I have not seen it so can not verify it works. Supposedly you can run an RUU to restore your phone to 2.1. There is a youtube video of it floating around. If you search for it on their site you should be able to find it. Otherwise, you will have to wait for the unrevoked team to find the exploit to allow root on hboot 2.16

And by other guys, Xtremedays is who I was talking about. :D

Thanks for the info, figured there was some way around it. If you read that thread the guy still had s-off and was able to flash amon_ra recovery.

hey guys i had a question. I just finished reading the page with the new 2.3 rooted version by novox77. I wanted to ask where do I get that big file from and then rename it too PC36IMG.zip. After that do I just put it on my sd card and run it from the hboot screen? Will it automaticly update the kernels, radios and wimax? Will I have to download anything else and put it on the sd card? Thanks

Which file are you talking about? Rooted Stock 2.3 Rom? Radio/Wimax/NV update? Something else?

Sorry I was talking about the 2.3 ROM. Does that come with the Radio/ Wimax update?

You can flash either the odex or deodex stock rooted 2.3 rom without flashing the radios. The radio update is separate and is flashable like a rom.

The roms are available here: [ROM][STOCK] --- Version 4.22.651.2 --- Odexed & De-Odexed --- - xda-developers

The flashable radio update it available here: [ Radios ][ 6-3 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

i just read about odex and deodex but can you explain it a little fore me which one would be better to download on my phone? Thank you sir.

Odex is faster but not really good for themes and mods. Deodex is a bit slower but easier to theme and mod. Odex is basically the way it would be stock

Thanks alot Xtreme! What do you think if I install Mikfroyo on my phone you think it would look good?

Mik is good. I ran it for a while and I had it on my wife's phone too til recently. I am running MikG 1.02 right now. It has sense 2.1 with some 3.0 stuff in it and no issues so far other than the stock kernel sucks on battery :)

Man I can just imagine how much info of rooting and ROMS you got in your head! I wish i can have a 1/4. Is it pretty difficult to install one of those ROMS your talking about or is it pretty easy?

Pretty easy. Read the Rooting for Dummies guide under after rooting and it will tell you step by step how to do it.

I don't really know that much about this stuff.....just what I have learned from experience and reading here.

Sorry to butt into this conversation but I could really use some help..

I've been working to root my phone via unrevoked for about 4 hours and been stuck on the same issue for the whole time. The unrevoked process will always get hung up on the "waiting for system to reboot" or "waiting for system to settle" phase. I've tried different PCs and different OSs and nothing seems to work.
I also have all the precautions in place: factory reset phone, no interfering software on my PC, antivirus off...

At one point during the process my computer always makes a noise signaling that the device is being disconnected and then immediately reconnected. I'm assuming this has something to do with it. It may also be that the versions of hboot and android software are not compatible? How can I tell?

I would really appreciate any advice!!
