Root ROOTING For Dummies

Do you know how I can see the percentage of the battery in the Mik 3D ROM?

You can use battery monitor widget from the market. Right now there are no mods for Mik 3D. Granite is working on some but there will likely not be much as far as that goes til it is out of beta and into release stage.

hey ocn you said your having a blast with V6 SuperCharger. I just read the tutorial. It seems kinda hard. Also they have it for a specific phone? Can you do some elaboration on what that does for you and how easy it is to install?

Thanks a ton!

you do not install anything except for an app called script manager that you can get from the market. the actual file is just a script which rearranges and prioritizes how the phone uses the internal memory (ram) and thus makes everything run much more smoother. have you ever had your internal memory on your phone or even your computer get all used up? it really slows your phone or computer way down. well this script manages the memory so that you will not get any low memory and can really speed things up. for me i notice that the sense launcher and transitions are that much faster and smoother.

1.so basically get the supercharger onto your card.
2.run script manager and run as root.
3.find the v6 supercharger file
4.once it goes it will ask you how fast do you want the screen to scroll (0-3). (when you run the script a whole bunch of commands and such will scroll through the screen. if you want to know what it is doing then select 3 for slow or 1 if you do not want to see it. you can use the screen to scroll up if you want to see something.
5.next you are asked to pick a number 1-17. i haven't tried them all yet but 8 or 9 seems to work well for me.
6.once you made your selection you can then just exit out. and it says that it is recommend that you reboot. so reboot.

what is cool is that the script manager has a widget that you can put on your homescreen that can run the script from there.

i hope that helps.

Yes it is true and this method, thanks to ocn for the write up, will get you rooted without wiping your phone. Once you get rooted you can use a program like Titanium backup to backup all your apps and then flash a rom.

Koolaid,

I wanted to chime in on the wiping...With MikRoms it's advised to wipe everything except SDCard when flashing one of his roms, even if he just goes from 2.42 to 2.43, for example. The reason is that he rebuilds the entire rom from the ground up each and every time he builds a rom. Some get away with not wiping everything while others don't. Just my 2 cents on that.

Mods and themes will start popping when it becomes a full release.

RE-INSTALLING ANDROID MARKET

My SD card is corrupt. I'm using Mikfroyo with DarkTremor so when the card crashed, it took most apps with it.

I need to back up my SMS before I change to a different backup but I can't install SMS Backup & Restore because I don't have Android Market!

How can I re-install Android Market or install SMS Backup & Restore another way?
I'm not familiar with installing the APK way but I'm sure I could learn if necessary.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You could do a couple of things, the options are really endless.

Install SMS from online would be one option. Or you could use adb and push it.

You could also get the ROM that you are using and use 7-zip and pull out the vending apk and push it to /system/app with adb as well.

I would make you flashables if I could get to that stuff here at work, but I can't.

And then update to MikG. :D

Highly recommended to wipe everything except SD card before flashing.

Nick, you're usually good for solutions, but this time, you got me lost, buddy! lol

I'm not clear on how I could install SMS from online. I don't have 7-zip and don't know how I could install that either. The ROM I'm using is MikFroyo. I don't know how to use ADB or how to push it but I learn pretty quick.

What is MikG? I might be interested. You're the one who put me on to MikFroyo months ago & I love it!

I basically need a way to backup my SMS so I can add it back after I wipe everything and start fresh with a new SD card. "SMS Backup & Restore" would give me that option if I could just get it installed & the only way I know how is through the Market but like I said, I learn quick if there are other options.

MikG is the 2.3.3 version. It includes Sense 2.1 and some 3.0 which will not be officially released to the Evo 4G. It is a very well done rom and I highly recommend it. I am currently running Mik 3D which is the ported rom from the Evo 3D. Also very well done and stable even though it is still a "beta". You can try and reflash your current rom and see if it restores the market. If not you might be learning how to use adb to get the file to the right place to use on your phone.

Ok sorry, let me clear some of it up for you with some links. ;)

First here's a link for sms backup, download it and install it on your phone. You can actually create an account in there and link your phone to it via your phone number and magically install it on your phone through the cloud.

Check out themikmik.com for MikG, it's pretty sweet rom, but of course, IMO, any rom amikam puts out is legit.

Here's a link to setting up adb. Let me know if you have any other questions throughout the process. ADB is easy and it's a must. There's also a guide in the Evo 4g section of themikmik.com, I would link that but it's blocked here at work.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Just realized I forgot a link and a different option to get your market.

Here's a link to 7-zip, you would right click on the zip of the rom you are running and open as archive and then navigate to /system/app and find the vending apk and drag it to your desktop.

You could copy it to you sd card and use a file explorer to put it in the /system/app folder. Be sure to set the permissions to match the other ones in there.

Reboot and should be good to go.

Many Thanks!

The website still thinks I have it installed so I can't install it that way.

I'm definitely going to try MikG when I finish solving this problem. Do you think I need to Unroot and start from scratch installing Amon Ra again & the whole nine or should I just do a factory reset, flash MikG & partition the new SD Card?

I'll be working on this. Clearly it's something I need to know!

I definitely will!!! Thanks as always!!!

I went to this page and have no idea which one to download. HELP!!!

You can try and reflash your current rom and see if it restores the market.

I'm about to give this a shot without wiping first. If I wipe the phone I'll lose my SMS messages, right? That's the whole reason why I need to get the Market back...so I can install SMS Backup & Restore to put the SMS messages back on after I flash the new ROM & setup the new SD Card since the old one went bad.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Is there any way to root an EVO that has Gingerbread, but still running a 2.10 HBOOT? The new Revolutionary method does only supports 2.15 & 2.16. I tried running Unrevoked3, but it consistantly tells me that my version is too new, despite trying all the advised work-arounds.

Strange. Well problem with unrooting or flashing mikg is that you will have to reset your phone which will then in turn get rid of you messages you are wanting to back up.

Also no real need to partition the card unless you are going to use DT A2SD and no real reason, IMO, to use a2sd unless you have a lot of apps. I tried it out and really didn't care for it too much...but that was a long time ago. I'm actually contemplating setting it all back up again.

Adb is awesome.

Do you have root explorer? If so just take out the vending apk from /system/app in the version of mikfroyo you are using and put it in your phone in the system/app folder. What version you running, I might have it.

The unrooting/flashing MikG question pertains to after I solve this problem. Can you help me with which MikG version to use? Do you have a link where I can download it? I saw several versions on the MikMik site.

I do use DT A2SD. I have a BOATLOAD of apps on my phone and it works GREAT!!! That was the main reason I rooted to begin with.

I don't have root explorer but I'll be looking for it right now to try that route.
I'm running MikFroYo v4.61.

I'll probably be up all night:
1. Trying to fix the Market issue.
2. Wiping the phone
3. Flashing MikG
4. Partitioning the new SD card
5. Re-installing all the apps.

(...need a pot of coffee!!!)

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!
