Root ROOTING For Dummies

The unrooting/flashing MikG question pertains to after I solve this problem. Can you help me with which MikG version to use? Do you have a link where I can download it? I saw several versions on the MikMik site.

I do use DT A2SD. I have a BOATLOAD of apps on my phone and it works GREAT!!! That was the main reason I rooted to begin with.

I don't have root explorer but I'll be looking for it right now to try that route.

I'll probably be up all night:
1. Trying to fix the Market issue.
2. Wiping the phone
3. Flashing MikG
4. Partitioning the new SD card
5. Re-installing all the apps.

(...need a pot of coffee!!!)

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Here's a link to the download section. If you are going to reflash I wouldn't worry about fixing the market issue. Just wipe everything and flash mikg 2.45.

I have to fix the Market Issue to backup my SMS messages. I use texting a lot for work so I have to save them.

That's the same page I posted earlier. My question was which one do I use? Multiupload 1 or 2? ...or is that just 2 parts of 1 big file?

Is Root Explorer a program that lets you view your files on the PC or is it an app on the phone? I don't know which one I'm looking for.

Sorry, didn't go to the link because I was at work at it was blocked. That doesn't matter which one you go to, just 2 options to download the same file.

What version you on? Mikfroyo that is?

I'm running MikFroYo v4.61.

Do you have a link for Root Explorer? All I've found is an app for the phone & that won't help because, remember, I can't install apps from the Market.

Here's a link for ES File Explorer, it's free but not as good as root explorer, however it gets the job done.

Here's a link for root explorer, it's like 4 dollars (gone up since I bought it), but is well worth it.

Either one will do what you want them to do. Sorry if I would have saw this last night I would have made you a flashable for the market. I will check my SD on my phone to see if I still have it, if so I can unzip it there and make a flashable from my phone to put the market back into your system app.

Since you are on 4.61 you are going to also need the vending.odex file too.

ps. how did you market get uninstalled?

EDIT: Actually I think you will have ES Explorer, because Mik usually included it in his ROMs

EDIT2: You don't need the market on your phone to install apps, just use the links above to install them. It works great.

I created you a flashable (see attached) for it, it's from 4.62 but it should work. Definitely nandroid, seeing as though I made it from my phone and I haven't tested it since I'm on MikG.

It should work though. Let me know.

What is Sense 2.1 and 3.0?

I went to this page and have no idea which one to download. HELP!!!
Download Links

I'm about to give this a shot without wiping first. If I wipe the phone I'll lose my SMS messages, right? That's the whole reason why I need to get the Market back...so I can install SMS Backup & Restore to put the SMS messages back on after I flash the new ROM & setup the new SD Card since the old one went bad.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Sense 1.0 is the version that was included with the Froyo OTA and the GB OTA. Sense 2.1 and 3.0 is larger and has alot more as far as widgets and such that are really cool. As far as the download, 2.45 is the latest version of MikG. Click on either of the Multiupload links to get to it. If you get SMS backup working, you can set it to do a scheduled backup and email the backup to you. It can be set to do it whenever you want so you might be able to avoid this issue again if by some chance you run into it.

Still trying to get an answer on this.... :)

Thanks...

it would be easier if you made a thread on this question. otherwise it can get lost in this thread. but if you look up i asked a question on it.

are you talking about amon ra 2.3? never seen haus mod version of it. where have you seen it mentioned?

Is there any way to root an EVO that has Gingerbread, but still running a 2.10 HBOOT? The new Revolutionary method does only supports 2.15 & 2.16. I tried running Unrevoked3, but it consistantly tells me that my version is too new, despite trying all the advised work-arounds.

Anyone have any input or ideas? My rooted phone got replaced under warranty, and one they sent me came pre-loaded with GB, but an old HBOOT. I NEED ROOT! Please help.

Have you tried unrevoked? What hboot did it come with?

Edit: read your other post after. What version of Unrevoked are you using? 3.32?

I tried to put the v6 supercharger on my phone. I followed the settings provided on xda and crap my phone was on the white screen of the htc logo for 15 mins. I was like nooo. Thank god for nandroid and Amen to Amon! Just thought I would share that!

One of my friends got a replacement Evo because his had cracked. He currently has the 2.3 gb version on there. Yesterday I tried to go in the hboot screen but nothing happened. I held the power and volume button down for a good min and nothing happened. Once I let go of the power button it just turned on and came to the home screen. Any idea why thats happening?

I have done this about 500 times in 2 days and at the end it still says "is firmware to new"??? Factory reset, uninstalled and reinstalled EVERYTHING about 100 more times, I am about to chuck either my computer and or EVO out the window...any suggestions before I cost myself some money???

If your bootloader is 2.16 then urevoked 3.32 will not work if you are on GB, there is an alternate way to root with a 2.16 bootloader, I'll find the post and post it here, if I recall it is in this thread.

EDIT: Here is the thread in regard to rooting a 2.16, I rooted mine, if you follow the steps you shouldn't have any problems

Hope everyone is still Getting Their Root On, as ocnbrze says. ;)

Sorry I have not updated the Guide in a.. while!

Getting prepared for a new member of the family, and am in the absence of a computer. So no way to give y'all updates. I'll eventually get it posted that this Root Method does not work with Gingerbread, and will possibly update it for it.

Kind of upset that ocnbrze's was locked, I wanted to comment. Wish i had a EVO 4G again, just so I could use his guide to Root it. But I thanked anyway. Good job ocnbrze!

So, new to rooting so I guess it's about time I got started!

I'm still on froyo 2.2 hboot 2.10. I've been reading through the guides and I'm not sure if I should be using Revolutionary or should I be following the unrevoked3.32 guide? From what I've read, if I use Unrevoked, I can still completely unroot the phone(all the way back to stock 2.2 with S-ON), but Revolutionary can only get you back to a stock recovery and stock ROM but S-OFF still?

Just to clarify, once I'm rooted I can flash GB ROMs?

Thanks all.

unrevoked is for those who on froyo and have hboot 2.10 and those that are on gingerbread then you need to use revolutionary. and yes once you are rooted you can just flash a gingerbread rom and you will be updated and on gingerbread.

Ok, thanks ocnbrze. So unrevoked it is, but the unrevoked website has unrevoked 3.32 and unrevoked-forever. Do I need to run unrevoked-forever after running unrevoked 3.32 or am I good to go with just unrevoked 3.32?

Thanks again!

I believe that Unrevoked 3.* runs unrevoked forever when it roots your phone. Unrevoked forever was for those that rooted before permanent root was accomplished by the unrevoked team.
