Root ROOTING For Dummies

get the wimax rsa key checker from the market and make sure that you have your wimax keys intact.

Before I checked here this morning I flashed same kernal but 'universal' instead of 'godmode'. Works again. Thanks I will keep the wimax rsa key checker though. Good tool to have.

oops, should have caught that one last night.:o

yeah you have to pay attention to what you are flashing. i have seen where someone flashed a rom that was made for a different phone and tried to flash it on his evo and it bricked it. so be very careful and know what you are flashing.

kernels are very specific. the synergy-godmode are for that rom only. it will not work on other roms.

glad you figured it out though.

Does anybody know how I can install Sprint TV?
I actually don't even remember if it was on my EVO from the start but I definitely want it.

I have an EVO 4G and I'm running MikG (Thanks Nick1313!!! I'm LOVING it!!!) and Amon Ra.

Also, where can I find Mods for both MikG and Amon Ra? I remember seeing a page with them at one point but can't seem to find it again.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Here's a link for all the sprint apps. Click Me

Here's a link for all the Mods/Themes at themikmik.

As far as mods for Amon Ra, not sure what you mean. Amon Ra is just your recovery and as far as I know there aren't any "mods" for it. I just use it to restore/backup/etc.

ps. You're welcome.
pss. Did you flash that market I posted awhile back? Never heard if it worked for you.

It's the "HAUS MOD Rev. A"
I saw it on this MikMik YouTube video at about 2:10.
How to Flash a ROM on the HTC Evo 4G.flv - YouTube
I'll try to hit him up to see about it.

I still didn't get going with ADB yet, but I'm going to post the whole process I went through as an FYI for those who may go through the same problem. Basically, I downloaded the APK for SMS Backup & Restore & installed it via HTC Sync, backed up the SMS, flashed MikG, then restored the SMS. I'm LOVING MikG!!!! Thanks a million for the recommendation!!!

Yea after I posted that I actually read a little bit about what that mod was, and basically what I gathered from it was that they just used a different kernel for the recovery which got rid of the screen tears when you reboot and possibly some tweaks to speed up backing up and restoring. So if you don't want to, no real need to change to that one, it's up to you.

Well I actually posted you a downloadable flashable for the market...but either way happy you got it all worked out.

As for ADB here's a guide to set it up and another guide here with some more useful commands and what not.

And you are welcome for the recommendation.;)

Hey guys, need some help.

What's the best way to root a EVO 4G still on factory android 2.2? Should I OTA to 2.3.3., get root with revolutionary or root first with unrevoked then flash with rooted 2.3.3 stock rom?

Thanks!

no the easiest way is to follow this guide here. just go to the op and follow directions. if you have issues feel free to ask. just make sure that you read everything in the op first before trying it.

Couple of questions after rooting...

Can I update my PRL without worrying about how it will affect my root? It seems I've lost MMS ability and was hoping a PRL update would help. If not, is there a known way to fix this?

Since I have successfully rooted, can I now choose to change my ROM to the Gingerbread ROM? If so, will I need to flash multiple files (ROM, radios, etc) or just one?

Thank you.

nope you can update your prl and profile without loosing root. you just do not want to do a software or firmware update. you could loose root, and potentially no way to re-root your phone.

you might want to think about updating your radios. it might help. if you are goning to update them then i would recommend that you flash the radio combo all in one file.

you get it here:
[ Radios ][ 7-4 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

also if you want the latest radio(we just got another maintenace ota software #4.53.651.1):
Download EVO Radio zip

just keep in mind that you should have a full battery before doing it and also to have a lot of patience. it can take a bit to install. but whatever you do DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY OUT. it WILL brick your phone.

Thanks for your help! Of course I have followup questions.

The radio combo updates hboot (I have 2.10) among other things as you mentioned. Do I need to flash this update prior to flashing ROMs?

Can I flash any of the ROMs located here: HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

Do I need to concern myself with which ones are AOSP and Sense? I prefer Sense UIs. Can I flash either?

My preference is to update to a stable phone state with gingerbread, with all the firmware and radios functioning (not still being worked on by devs).

Since rooting I've been to the custom recovery boot screen a couple of times. I've noticed there are other clockwork mod versions to choose from. Are there benefits? Do you recommend anything in particular, or go with what I rooted with?

Do you recommend a ROM manager app to facilitate flashing ROMs?

Also, am I correct in understanding you should never have your phone connected to power or USB when flashing?

Final question, are nandroid backups created from Recovery really all a person needs for recovery protection, or is an app such as Titanium backup highly encouraged?

Thank you!

1. your radios will carry over from rom to rom. wiping will not change them. so you can flash them at any point.

2.use this one. its to update:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

3.aosp is basically pure android. while sense has the sense launcher. you can try them both. i used to hate aosp roms but you get used to them after awhile. they do take some tweeking. there is a gps fix. you have to flash the gapps(google apps) file. but once it is setup they way you want, yo will have a very fast rom with great battery life. i was on cm7/tiamat sbc kernel and i was easily getting 18-35 hours depending on how much i used it. most sense roms are very stable and do not need and special tinkerning.

4.try mikg2.5 best stable ron in my opinion.

5.amon ra 2.3 is ther preferred recovery. you can go here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html and go to the switching recovery section.

6.do not use rom manager. it is way to buggy and can create more issues then it is worth. plus it will not work with amon ra.

7.i never had any issues to tell you the truth plugging my phone into the usb port while flashing. i usually do not do it, but i do not see why it is an issue.

8.nandroid backups are a complete snapshot of your phone's current state. just remember that they are your friend. also make sure that you have at least one nandroid backup that has the wimax keys backed up. you should also have that one nandroid backup someplace safe like your computer. it is possible you could loose them and you will not have 4g any more.

as far as titanium backup goes. i use it all the time. great way to backup your apps. just do not restore system data only app data. system data may contain bits and pieces of your previous rom and will create issues with your current rom.

no worries. all i am doing is paying it forward. i was a noob once like you. if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Rog, copy all :-)

The radios combo you mentioned above does not appear to contain the latest hboot. So I should install the latest version listed on that same page correct? Also, the author mentions that reflashing the kernel may be required. Which kernel is that and where do I get it? Thank you.

don't mess with hboots. that is another way to brick your phone. the one that is linked is the one right before the latest ota. it is for 4.24.651.1 flash the combo then if you want you can flash the latest radio for 4.53.651.1 Download EVO Radio zip

Do I need to do any wiping or clearing of cache/dalvik cache prior to flashing radios, or is that just required prior to flashing roms, kernels, etc?

And will I need to flash gapps after any ROM I install?

i really do not think that you need to do it. but i worry about my radios so i wipe do wipe dalvik cache and cache and flash them. so i would do the same.

Ok I will then :)

When I copy the radio file to the sdcard, will I need to delete any portion of the file name prior to flashing?

When I get to flashing a ROM afterward, will I always need to flash gapps after rebooting? (I saw your post several threads above and got to wondering...)

nope just flash away. no need to change the names and that goes for roms as well.

the gapp file is for aosp roms. they are roms that do not have sense or its widgets in the rom. aosp(android open source project) is pure android, but because of google sent the cyanogen mod team a cease and desist order they took out any google apps. so no you have to flash them separately.

with sense roms you do not have to do it. everything thing is already there.

so it will depend on what rom you are going to flash.

Great--thank you! Hboot will recognize the file when I enter hold power/volume down?
