Root ROOTING For Dummies

do you have s-off? if you do have s-off then all you need is a custom recovery. boot up and plug your phone to the pc via usb and go here http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/395962-guide-rooting-gingerbread-revolutionary.html and go to the switching recoveries section. it has directions on how to get you a custom recovery.

what hboot do you have?

Here's my current Evo 4G setup. Below the screenshot are my priorities.

I'd like to root to
1) increase my battery life
2) put myself in a position to "upgrade" my root with minimal effort when unrootable gingerbread is available
3) keep a very similar theme, bootload, etc to my existing environment
4) keep and upgrade Sense to the maximum possible
5) enable me to explore flashing ROMs, themes, bootloads, etc after I become more comfortable with rooting
6) delete bloatware
7) enable HDMI and music playback over external media (i.e. play netflix media over my HDMI capable TV and play music through my stereo system and laptop)

My questions are
1) which version of unrevoked should I use?
2) do I need to accept any of the OTA updates first if I decide to go ahead and root with Revolution?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go. If you have any questions of me, please do ask. Thank you!

1.you need to check your hboot version (power off then press and hold power+vol down. you may need to uncheck fastboot in settings/applications/uncheck fast boot).

never accept an ota if you are rooted or plan on rooting your phone.

hboot is 2.10.0001
So I will need to root with your first option? Or do you recommend upgrading to gingerbread and then rooting based on my original priorities?
 
I actually thought that the latest unrevoked was 3... could be wrong. I used the Unrevoked#, not the forever, worked fine.

Follow the guide though, you'll get it first try!
 
I posted a question but, haven't recieved a reply...:( Not sure what i am doing wrong but can someone help. Sorry if this post doesn't pertain to rooting.
 
To start off, I apologize for the lengthy post, but I figure if you have all the info, you could help me begin to troubleshoot.

I have rooted using Unrevoked 3 and flashed CyanogenMod 7 a little while ago. Over the weekend, I was low on space and battery life, trying to use my Evo as a hotspot and taking pictures, etc. Well, it froze and I pulled the battery. When I went to reboot, it only showed the CyanogenMod splash screen. I didn't have internet access at the time, but really needed my phone. I had a PC36IMG.zip on my sdcard and flashed that. I was able to get back up and running, but I lost the ability to receive text messages. I could send texts and IMs, call, use data, etc. but not receive texts.
When I got internet access, I saw that I could download a Sense ROM, flash it up, update the PRL and should be okay. I flashed Fresh Sense ROM, updated, used the MSL code reader and did the ##????# thing, reset it, but still nothing.

Today, I tried re-flashing CyangogenMod and then lost the Market, Dialer and Contacts along with the ability to edit the CyanogenMod settings along with a bunch of other little things that I haven't fully explored.

I've tried unrooting it using the unrevoked forever s-on.zip, but it stuck and the system info message (and I downloaded it 3 times). I tried just flashing the PC36IMG.zip from xda and it wouldn't flash, either.

I'm at my wits end and need some direction because I know I've missed steps and made missteps. I have to have my phone for work and if I need to take it back to Sprint that's fine, I just need to unroot it! Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

1.when you flashed cm7 you needed to flash the gapps file as well to get the market and such.
2.what was the error given if you use unrevoked? do you have s-on or s-off? and what PC36IMG file are you talking about?
3.what recovery do you have? and what is your hboot?
 
Damn! Ocn beat me to it :-(

Yeah for licensing legal hullaballu, google apps stuffs can't be included with CM7.

Also, I learned this the hard way... With CM7, flash it, boot it up, shut it down properly and then flash gapps. If you try to flash gapps right after flashing the rom that seems to be bad news bears.

I don't understand how flashing a different recovery would help? More accurately, you probably re-flashed the recovery you already had.

Also, you don't need to unroot your phone. If worst came to worst you could flash MikG and be a-ok. Not having CM7 isn't the end of the world (tbh i like mikg better anyway, but whatever, that's just me personally).
 
Yesterday I accidentally dropped my evo and it hit the ground straight where the charge port is. Luckily I had a protective hard cover. The front cover of the protector came off and went one direction, the back part of the cover came off and went another direction, the back cover which is on the evo came off and flew in another direction and the battery came out and went another way. Thank God I didn't even get one scratch on the phone. It turned on immediately and has been functioning normally. Is there anything that I have to look out for?

should be ok as long as the screen works. also take a look at the usb port and maybe the camera lens as well.
 
Ok rooted,

Running EVOlvedROM r3chargeD RC1
[ROM][8.16.11][370mb+free] EVOlvedROM r3chargeD RC1 "Just Another Sense 3.0 Port" - xda-developers

The kernal which comes with that is underclocked so I flashed:

Aggressive-Freedom-v0.8.5-SYNERGY_GODMODE-signed.zip

from

[Kernel][Sense]Evo 4g Freedom-v0.8.5 Kernel GB MR 2.6.35.10 - xda-developers

Once installed 4g gives message "unable to start 4g" on the options screen.

So I flashed Aggressive-Freedom-v0.8.5-SYNERGY_GODMODE-signed.zip


4g still failing. Need antenna?


Ideas very much appreciated.

Before I checked here this morning I flashed same kernal but 'universal' instead of 'godmode'. Works again. Thanks I will keep the wimax rsa key checker though. Good tool to have.
