Root ROOTING For Dummies

Despite my paranoia and despite waiting for nothing, the procedure went flawlessly. After my most recent update I noticed the status bar truly did flash for just one second...I missed it the first time. After the status bar completes, you're ready to reboot. The whole procedure takes just a few minutes after a nand backup and wiping the cache and dalvik cache (recommended by Ocnbrze). The process does eat up some battery, so be sure to have a full or nearly full battery if you attempt it.

I've been wanting to root for months and finally decided to jump in. It's taken a lot of time though because I'm a noob and very cautious. But now after rooting, learning to backup with amon ra and Titanium, and flashing radios...I've got my sights set on a new ROM.

I want to go with Ocnbrze's recommendation of Mikg v2.5 because I want a stable sense ROM but I want HDMI and I'm not sure if it's part of the ROM.

Anyway, that's where I'm at and thanks for following along with my drama tonight.

And a huge thanks to Ocnbrze for staying engaged every step of the way!

you should see someone for that.:D of course you can always just face your fears and do it.
I really was going to do it today, but the DL failed. I'll do it this week, I'll grab the file at school, and flash it once I'm home.

Maybe even on Tuesday. :)

i'm just paying it forward is all. and glad everything worked out.

Well best of luck to you!

Wow, you had one heck of a night, sorry i wasn't here to tell you all is well when you get to that screen. I just updated a couple of weeks ago and did the same thing. Happy you got it.

Also with Mikg 2.5, I think the chopsuey test kernel has hdmi support.

Ps. You won't regret Mikg.

Great--thank you! My plan is to install the Mikg ROM and afterward install the kernel....is that the correct order?

Ok I'm back in the game with a few more questions :D

Mikg 2.51 patch is out...should I flash 2.5 then 2.51 with the bundled kernel?

ocnbrze

when i go to install the 2.51 patch, i do not wipe everything correct? just the two caches?

also, chopsuey works with mikg 2.5/51 correct?

Complete! Using Mikg 2.51 with Chopsuey 9.26 universal. No problems so far...now to load back apps (not restoring system data, just apps).

Thx ocnbrze!

I'm running MikG right now.
I have some information I need to get from a previous backup when I was running MikFroyo.

AFTER I DO A BACKUP...

Do I need to reinstall MikFroyo before I flash the backup with the info I need or do I just flash the backup with Amon Ra without changing the ROM first?

In other words, when I do a recovery with Amon Ra is it doing the ROM also or just the info and the ROM needs to be running first?

Any help is always appreciated!!!

a nandroid backup is a complete snapshot of your phone's current setup. so everything is saved on your backup except for your radios. so if you need info from a previous rom then you can just make a nandroid backup of your current rom. then just do a nandroid restore of your previous rom and then when done just restore back to your current rom.

Many thanks to the devs and everybody else. Got mine rooted then flashed r3chargeD from EVOlved (ROM) then I flashed golden Monkey wow, what a difference. Thanks again.

I am getting ready to root my phone. But first I have a question regarding part of the pre-rooting instructions. You say to unnstall all htc sync related software from my computer. I have three items in my Add/Remove Software list: htc bmp usb driver, htc driver installer and htc sync. I can see uninstalling the last two, but what will uninstalling the htc bmp usb driver do? Will the needed usb drivers still be on my system?

just unistall htc sync. the drivers should be ok. you just do not want htc sync to interfer with the rooting process.

I was hoping that would be the case. But I have another question. The pre-rooting instuctions say to reset the phone, then the next step step (optional) says to use "App List Backup." If someone is going to use App List Backup, shouldn't that be done before resetting the phone because resetting the phone will erase all of the user installed apps, which means those apps will not be included in the list created by App List Backup if it is used after resetting. Thanks so much.

you are right you need to do app list backup before doing a factory reset.

As an alternative appbrain is another good one. Allows you to sync your apps to an online account and then download them after reset.

Now I've got another problem. I've jst run UnrEVOked (successfully or so it appears). Below final step in the running unrEVOked section is the following:
-------------------------------------------

BEFORE WE START CUSTOMIZING - LETS MAKE SURE WE ARE FULLY ROOTED

STEP 1: TURN OFF DEVICE
Power down the device by holding the POWER button for 2 seconds. Allow it to shutdown completely. Wait about 10 seconds before next step.

STEP 2: BOOTLOADER MODE
Hold down VOL DOWN + POWER until device boots into a White Screen.
Move to BOOTLOADER by using the VOL DOWN toggle and select by using POWER button. The device will now boot into Recovery mode.
------------------------------------------------------------
My problem is with STEP 2. My phone boots to the HBoot screen. There is NO "Bootloader" on that screen. The only way I can get to a screen that lists Bootloader is by selecting Fastboot. After getting to that screen and selecting Bootloader, it appears to go back to the HBoot screen and I have been unable to find S-Off. Therefore, I can't tell whether or not all of the security is off. What do I do?

NOTE: I have Android 2.2. At the top of both the HBoot and FastBoot screens there are some green lines of info. The very first/top line says "SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-OFF." Does this mean anything? Is this what I'm looking for?

The s-off at the end of that line is what you are looking for. You should be good to go. Select recovery and make sure it loads.
