What features do you want on the Evo 2?

on june 4.. sprint has daivd baine (what ever that magician's name was that did the echo)...

big release....

david makes the evo 3d disappear.. and replaced with Bluescreen's evo 3d...

that would blow everyone's mind .. and push all talks of apple 5 /steve jobs... to the 2nd page.
If Sprint did this, I'd be extremely happy. In fact, please, spread this. Get this to sprint. tell them: "HEy Sprint, for the most part, your EVO 3D sucks. Take the screen, innards, Sense 2.1, and Gingerbread and keep them. Ditch the 3D, gimme my kickstand, and make this appear on launch day. Thanks, and have a nice day."

The Evo has the 1st gen snapdragon and this skipped an entire chipset and has the latest dual core 8860 soc with adreno 220 (faster than the incredible S,desire HD and thunderbolt and first phone to use that gpu), 3D, Much better cameras (i assume), new sense, bigger battery ...if you can't get excited about that, I don't know what would.......Quadcore????

If you think like me, then it's disappointing that HTC refuses to use anything other than Qualcomm SoCs. It may be the fastest Snapdragon, but as it's still an A8 design, it's a generation behind even the aging Tegra 2, which is A9-based. I hate to say it, but if HTC doesn't rethink their position, their devices are quickly going to be outmatched, even by Apple. Their new A5 SoC (which may or may not end up in the next iPhone) is much more powerful than the EVO 3D's Snapdragon. Nvidia will have Tegra 3 in devices by Q3 or Q4 of this year, which will probably mop the floor with even the A5.

All of this would make me very reluctant to sign a 2-year deal for the EVO 3D, or to buy it unsubsidized. Not very future-proof.

Well, the design is always under improvement. You may find this somewhat interesting:

This is incorrect. That's like saying first gear and second gear give the same speed at 1000 RPMs. Clock speed is just ONE aspect of a CPU's performance. Right now, there are three high-end MPCore's we're dealing with;

Cortex-A8 (iPhone 3G S, 4, iPad, phones using the Hummingbird and TI OMAP SOCs)
Scorpion - (anything using a Snapdragon)
Cortex A9 - (iPad 2, likely iPhone 5, OMAP 4, Samsung's upcoming Exynos SOC, Tegra 2)

Clock for clock, Cortex A9 is roughly 20% faster than A8. Scorpion is roughly 5% faster than A8. A9 and Scorpion have support for 128-bit SIMD instructions while A8 is limited to 64-bit (main reason Snapdragon kills OMAP/Hummingbird in Linpack). All 3 MPCores can support NEON instructions sets. Anything using Scorpion or A8 DOES support NEON. Tegra removed NEON from Tegra 2's A9 to save on manufacturing costs, but Tegra 3 will have it. This kills performance in some areas. Exynos and OMAP 4 are expected to support NEON.

Then there's the multi-core aspect. Scorpion and A9 have support for up to quad-core, while A8 is limited to single core. Don't tell me that you honestly expect a 1ghz single-core to be the same speed as a 1ghz dual-core just because they are both 1ghz.

In terms of overall speed, it's A9 > Scorpion > A8. However, due to the removal of NEON, there will be some differences within the A9 segment. It should be;

A5/OMAP4/Exynos > Tegra (all indications are that A5 = Exynos, just as A4 = Hummingbird). And no one, NO ONE, in the industry expected the new PowerVR to kill Tegra 2. They were expected to be on par. We'll have a better idea when Exynos comes out and we can compare the two GPUs on the same OS.

If we toss in the 3D running at up to 1.2 GHz and quite a bit of promise with the new Adreno 220 gpu, then the race with the existing chips may come out a bit more even than you're expecting.

Might be interesting to see some of the end result benchmarks in a few areas.

I'm not saying they will be totally obsolete, and you make some good points. For all I know, Qualcomm may really turn the tables when their Krait-based models come out. But going by historical events, even if the CPUs are competitive, Adreno GPUs tend to trail the pack. And with Tegra 3 being advertised as offering 5x the performance of Tegra 2, and being slated for an ~August device debut it makes me seriously reconsider going with HTC.

you can not keep asking for the top top top ... it is a never ending chase and disappointment.

just because a device has all the TOP crap in it.. does not mean it is the TOP and most usable and reliable and supported and loved ...

I'm not necessarily asking for the top, but HTC/Qualcomm will be near the bottom very soon if they keep this up. They're being beaten by Samsung (Exynos), Apple (A5), Nvidia (Kal-El), and TI (OMAP 4). When the time comes for me to sign another 1 or 2 year contract, I'm not going to want to be locked into something that's already behind, especially for the same amount of money (since most of these phones are priced similarly).

I am all for better specs and take it with stride as each phone is release but I wish the manufactures would keep the usb ports, volume button and things of that nature in one location.

I'm debating not getting the 3D and waiting for an actual Evo 2, sans 3D. We'll see. I'm not into 3D stuff really and I think they might actually make an Evo 2 still.

Without sounding quite as grumpy, I'll say that I love the kickstand and use it most of the times that I put it down. It's just neato. :)

Yet they are the only ones opening their own retail stores to sell nothing but phones. HTC is selling more than just their hardware. hey are selling the brand, and of course the software (something that Apple has done very well wil thusfar).

How many official's words will it take for people to realize this is the EVO 2? Sprint literally says something like "this is the successor".

Well weather it has been stated or not, but the picture on sprints website is definatelly NOT the current evo. Save the picture to your computer and blow it up and you will find several differences, like front camera being in a slight different locating the grill is not a hole. Also the current evo does not have anything underneath the volume buttons and obviously the evo on sprints site does. Please before you start bashing do some work except just reading what everyone else tells you is the answer.

Also as far as the leaks, I have been following engadget and other sites for years an usually when engadget posts any specs as confirmed its is 99% correct. I'd say I trust them more then some random person in a forum.

Sprint - HTC EVO? 3D

I'd love to upgrade to the 3D, the tablet will be an extra if I get it...but what no one is talking about is when Evo 4G #1 will get Android 2.3 I'd still like to know as apparently under new Sprint guidelines, I am no longer allowed to upgrade every year like I've been doing...

If I were interested in who was selling the most, I'd have an iPhone.

I would still like an Evo 2, I think the 3D, while an impressive device, is not a successor to the original.

Agreed. I'm still not sure why they didn't do something like the Pyramid for Sprint; i.e., a straight upgrade that EVO owners have been clamoring for. The 3D seems like it came out of left field.

In my opinion if the Evo 3D had a kickstand and the charging port was on the bottom, it would be that straight upgrade from the Evo.

Adding 3D isn't a bad thing. It's actually a good thing. I personally enjoy 3D movies. And when it becomes cheaper to buy a 3D tv, everybody will have one. The only reason people bag on it is because they don't have one.

It reminds of of when the Evo launched and everyone ripped Sprint for putting 4G on the phone when most people couldn't even get 4G in their area. Almost a year (and many 4G market rollouts) later, 4G is a must on any phone released now.

I rag on 3D TV for lots of reasons, and don't have 3D stuff for those very reasons.

I agree that having the option is a good thing because choice is good.

I completely agree with this statement. I will have a 3D TV when that is my only other choice. I literally have no desire to have one at all. It's a strange feeling, actually, as I never feel this way about technology. I always want the latest and greatest. Apparently 3D is the latest and greatest, but I really don't want it.

I was simply making a point that you either lost, or chose to ignore. With HTC you are paying for much more than hardware, which is crystal clear. Some may not like Sense, but it is undeniable how much time they put into it along with updates for their users. This can't really be said about very many other Android handset makers.

Wrong. I could care less about 3d in my home and really have ZERO plans of upgrading my tv's at any price to get it. It's a novelty, and I have even less reason to have it on my phone.

Now, if it brings me a better overall product for some dumb reason, I won't knock having it in my phone, but I really don't see any reason to actually use it on any basis.

Someone brought up a good point. If you don't have a 3D laptop, 3D tv, or friends with a 3D phone, who can view the videos and pictures in 3D besides yourself?

We take depth and relative motion cues by constantly shifting focus. We're wired that way.

3d requires using your eyes-brain in a completely different way.

Still, the feature does cause buzz for the Evo.

History will record if it wins or loses. ;)

I read something that says a lot of people have issues viewing 3D and a lot of people experience nausea, dizziness, and other symptoms after watching 3D tv.

I don't know if it's a lot, but it's definitely a problem for some. Having seen avatar in regular 3d and standard imax, I was quite content with standard imax and just as absorbed into that world with the giant concave screen.

I just think the mfgs are jones'n for something premium they can wow the masses and charge for. They are trying to force feed it to the consumers whether we ruly want it, need it or not. Just come up with a better made and supported product. I'd be more loyal to that than to gimmicks. But at the same time, if the competition is doing it, they need to keep pace, and we the consumer don't fully win because we only see incrementa improvements to what WE want along with the improvements they want us to have.
