Root ROOTING For Dummies

I restarted everything...
Dowloaded a new Amon-Ra File...
Checked to make sure it was named correctly in Astro...
Rebooted into HBOOT...
IT FOUND IT!!!

So I have recovery again!

Now on to flash MikFroyo!!!

Any suggestions on which Radio & Kernel & in which order I should install them?

Thanks for all the help, everybody!!!

If your radio is 2.15.00.11.19 you don't need to flash a radio is up to date

Keep it up. I dunno how ya all do it. Akaza is that way too even after 4000 posts. I get tired of repeating myself after 2000 lol and end up giving the most succinct answer possible haha

I've typed my share of novels but they are getting fewer and farther between :)

Yeah...It can get pretty tiresome, but I just think back to when I was first doing it and think about all the guys I wore out with my questions. I still do wear some guys out with my questions, however now it's just more about themeing/skinning/editing xml stuff, etc...so it all evens out in the end. :D

hey, we were all noobs at one point or another, and this forum has proven itself to be quite the place for people to go to when theyre in a tough spot or are just totally ignorant to this kind of stuff. If it werent for the people who come here, learn, and then pay it forward then this place would be as useless as some of the forums for other devices ive perused... this evo forum rules because of the awesome people... you know who you are, and God bless all of you for all that you do(sorry 'bout the deity refrence, its just who i am :) )

+100...Well said and completely agree. Between this forum and the Mikfroyo community, I've learned a ton!

I rooted last night using the Universal Auto Root ~ v2.5 method, everything was going fun until now. I cannot send SMS messages. It gives me Error 97 Code 2.. Any ideas on how to fix this???

Done that and searched here and xda. Everyone says to call sprint. I did that and they were unable to fix it. Thats why I think it had something to do with the root.

Well are you on a custom ROM? Tried rebooting phone? Wiping your caches?

You could always unroot and reroot using this guide instead of autoroot.

However it really sounds like a network problem.

I tried calling my voice mail, which connected me to a different sprint rep. Who fixed the problem. It was a network issue. Thanks

Great!

Ok just make sure you have the updated radios which can be found here.

As for kernels it's really a hit or miss thing. I would say start here and here. First link is a basic guide about what each kernel is and what not and the second is much more in depth.

Personally I've had the best luck with 4.3.2 cfs sbc less havs. You might be completely different.

Here is the link to the netarchy kernels. Happy flashing! And welcome back to the land of root. :D

EDIT: Also be sure to follow the guide over at mikmik on how to flash mikfroyo.

Thanks, Nick!!! It's good to be back!!!
Thanks to Matt too!!!
I've learned a HELLUVA lot of stuff in the last 2 weeks!!!

Do you suggest I flash the Kernel before MikFroyo?

Here's the game plan...
1. Wipe the phone & SD Card
2. Flash the new Kernel
3. Flash MikFroyo
4. Install Apps again from scratch so I can move them with Darktremors.
5. Free Wifi App (dunno which one just yet)

No problem.

Follow this guide here to flash and you can't go wrong. Follow this guide here for A2SD and look here for wifi apps I have skinned. I'm going to be updating these with the latest wireless tethering app from the market.

You will have to flash the kernel in a separate recovery session AFTER flashing the Rom or it will be over written with the rom flash. Mik comes with the Sprint Hotspot hacked so you don't necessarily have to use a different wifi app.

True unless you have 4g. Sprint hotspot on mikfroyo doesn't work with 4g. And I always flash Rom and then kernel in same recovery and never have issues. However he's right if you flash kernel then Rom you will override your kernel you flash. All of that is outlined in that guide.

Thanks for the correction of Mik's hacked hot spot :D

I don't have 4g where I am at and that slips my mind once in a while.

You haven't had a problem with the SBC kernel messing up your battery?

Sorry to put my .02 in but I use SBC kernels also on 2 Evos and have not had any issues with either one. My wife's runs Netarchy 4.3.4 SBC and I have been running Tiamat 3.3.8 SBC.
