Root ROOTING For Dummies

You haven't had a problem with the SBC kernel messing up your battery?

I don't know about battery plating or it necessarily messing up, but I *do* know my battery life wasn't as good w/ an SBC kernel, as it is w/o it. My battery would stay on 100% a lot longer but overall it would drain a heck of a lot quicker. I've also read about more people having success using it w/ an extended battery, rather than stock. Keep in mind that this was just my experience w/ an SBC kernel, I know everyone's Evo's react differently to kernels and experiences will differ. Your best bet is to make a nandroid and give them a try.

That's impressive you got better life without SBC. Prior to using SBC I would always carry two batteries with me and have to swap around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Are you using netarchy kernels or something else?

Like you said, just goes to show how everyone's phone is different.

Like he said there is only one way to find out how your battery/phone reacts to the kernel, give it a shot. I will tell to make sure you give each kernel you try 2-3 days to settle into your phone before you decide how it's working. Be sure to read the kernel starter guide I linked you in one of my posts so that you can understand what each setting is.

Enjoy.

hey guys,

im having some trouble trying to install the HBOOT drivers. I am on windows xp. so i went into bootloader, and followed the instructions on the link given to install the HBOOT drivers. but i got stuck on the step where you have to update drivers. i go to the devices screen, but there is no Android listed anywhere. all that is listed is "android usb devices", then as a subcategory "my htc". i am very confused, can someone PLEASE help me get past this step. Thanks!

I rooted last night using the Universal Auto Root ~ v2.5 method, everything was going fun until now. I cannot send SMS messages. It gives me Error 97 Code 2.. Any ideas on how to fix this???

you broke it... PERMANENTLY!!! lol jk sounds like nick gotcha covered nike :)

2 batteries?!? that sounds like a PITA!! Im using the tiamat kernel (aosp only) and its rockin my face!! i get about 20 hrs w/ moderate usage b4 needing a chrg

oh and +1 to the letting the kernel settle... its kinda odd that kernels act like a shaken can of pop in that you need to let em settle a bit b4 they play nice sometimes. and no, theres no trick like tapping on the top of the can to expedite the process lol

i have htcsync uninstalled. but the htc drivers are still installed. I keep trying to install the HBOOT drivers, but it wont come up. i am on "charge only" and "usb debugging". I have not tried putting it on "disk drive" because i am afraid something will go wrong. i am still confused :(

lol yeah i meant disk... im not exactly sure cuz i rooted so long ago, so im conferring with a forum jedi lol perhaps i should unroot and root again just for the practice... short story, sit tight, well get this man ;)

ok, its charge only.

ok, so if youre running unrevoked to obtain root, once you uninstall htcsynch, you need to restart your computer according tot the guide. and when youre connected after boot, you then go to your device manager, and under other devices, there should be an android device of some kind. It doesnt necessarily show as android 1.0 like its apparently supposed to, but right click on that, select the driver manually, navigate to the location of the driver that you put on your computer(should be c:\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver) update the driver, and that should rectify this issue youve encountered. The guide does say that some have had to reinstall the driver after uninstalling the synch software. The device manager shoudl show android bootloader under android phone as an option, when thats correct, you should be set to unrevoke :)

I tried again on charge only and USB debugging. It still isn't working. When it does the SD card scanning thing, it says something along the lines of "no image", do you think that would be causing it to not work? or is it that USB debugging is on? And also, THANK YOU SO MUCH!, its nice to know that there is someone out there willing to help. :):):)

EDIT: the only thing under "other devices" is : PCI Simple Communications Controller, nothing else under "other devices"

Usb debugging needs to be on...

Did you try installing the drivers again? When you plug the phone in what does it do? Anything? Found new hardware?

I've installed the drivers ATLEAST twice. When i plug the phone into the computer, it says "this device can perform faster". Thats all, when i was using the phone earlier in the afternoon, it said "found new hardware", but not anymore.

EDIT: I tried the HBOOT driver installation step again, i click on "HBOOT USB", it does the scan thing and says "no image" four or five times, then on the last line it says "wrong image". I am getting a bit afraid at this point, hopefully i didn't permanently mess anything up...

EDIT 2:when i plug the phone in (as shown in the HBOOT installation steps), the computer does not recognize the phone at all, it just makes the sound (when you plug something in), it just doesnt show anything on screen.

If you guys can look at my reply above it would be great. I am still having trouble with the HBOOT installation. I am wondering if i could put my phone on disk drive, instead of charge only. I just want get a confirmation from someone who has more knowledge on this topic than I do(which is no knowledge). I just don't what to screw up my phone permanetly. Thanks again guys.

Uninstall the htcsync drivers. When you're in device manager, you don't necessarily have to see "Android 1.0", I didn't when I installed the hboot drivers. Right click on anything that has "Android" in its name and update drivers.

As for the "no or wrong image", don't worry about that. When going to hboot, the first thing your Evo does is scan for a PC36IMG file, since there is none, you'll get that message. You have to wait until your Evo scans for that file, *then* select hboot usb. Doing it prior won't do anything.

I had the same problem .... I had to get rid of HTC drivers completely before it would take then reinstalled HTC sync after to get the driver

Yeah I don't have to do it anymore, with the SBC kernels. Are you on stock battery?

When I did this I install htc sync and the drivers that came with it and then when it's done installing you should have two instances of HTC in your add/remove programs, just uninstall HTC sync, but leave the drivers.

Then go to device manager and make sure you have something in there called "Android...."

should I run htc sync? or should I uninstall right after I install? Also, in add/remove programs, there are 3 things listed with htc (htc driver installer, htc driver, htc sync), I dont think I am doing this right so I am going to ask a friend to walk me through the process.

Just uninstall htc sync..then go into device manager, while phone is plugged in, and see if you have something in there as "Android..." If so you are good to go.

Hi guys its been a while since I posted on this forum. so far I am loving my evo more and more. I just wanted to check the prl version and the numbers that its showing is 01115. The last time I checked it was 60662 I think. I was just wondering why is the numbers at 01115 now. Am I missing or doing something wrong?

thanks guys.

I actually read that that prl got updated automatically somehow and if you have a business account that's the prl you get. I'll look for the post and edit this post with it.

So to answer your question no you didn't do anything wrong.

EDIT: Oc beat me to it.
