I unfortunately found out about potential problems with cwm 2.5.0.7 on PVT4 HTC Desires (mine is PVT4, erase size 40,000) after having apparently successfully rooted my Desire with Unrevoked 3.32 on Mac OS.
When booting into recovery, I get a bunch of "E: Can't find Misc" and other error messages, all of which I've seen reported by other people in my situation.
Multiple attempts to rerun Unrevoked 3 with AmonRA 2.0.1 as a custom recovery result in the program getting stuck forever on the message "Installing Unrevoked3 service..." (longest I waited before giving up was over an hour...).
I have found that cwm 2.5.1.8 is supposed to be compatible with PVT4 Desires (erase size 40,000), yet attempting to run Unrevoked 3 with cwm 2.5.1.8 as a custom recovery still doesn't seem to get me rooted properly. cwm 2.5.1.8 does allow me to get past the "Installing Unrevoked3 service..." stage, only to have the program linger on "Running Root..." a few moments later, then terminate with “Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?”
I'm now stuck with an apparently rooted Desire (S-ON in hboot, yet Superuser Permissions app accounted for...), yet have cwm 2.5.0.7 on it, with the aforementioned "E: Can't find..." error messages.
Should I attempt to use an older version of Unrevoked 3? Where can I get my hands on Unrevoked 3.31 for Mac OS, for example?
Should I perhaps use an even newer version of cwm? I've seen mentions of cwm 3.x.x.x in other forums/threads.
Help?
Edit: I suppose it's version 3.21 I should've been looking for. I found it for Mac OS, ran it with AmonRa 2.0.1. Got my hopes up until it terminated (post the "Running root..." stage and multiple reboots) with "Internal error: couldn't find misc." Recovery mode coincidentally still shows version 2.5.0.7 and those annoying error messages. Help?
Edit 2: Impatience is terrible, isn't it? I went ahead and ran 3.21 with cwm 2.5.1.8. This seems to have worked so far. Unrevoked 3.21 terminated (after multiple success notifications) with "Done." and rebooted my Desire into recovery mode, which now shows as version 2.5.1.8, and NO errors in sight.
Edit 3: Arrrrggggggghh. Disaster strikes. I choose to reboot the system from the cwm 2.5.1.8 menu and my Desire embarks on an endless boot loop. All I can do is remove and reinsert the battery, and let this rest for the night.
Edit 4: Couldn't let it go. Researched boot loops a bit and followed a tip to restore the backup I created via the cwm 2.5.1.8 recovery menu immediately following the apparently successful root. I performed the restore and lo and behold... my Desire is up and running again. Aside from having lost several apps that were originally stored on my SD card (which I'm assuming I can restore later), all seems well (for now).
Sorry about the lengthy post... but perhaps leaving this sequence of events on here in full will prove to be of some assistance to other noobs such as myself.
