Root [Guide]ROOTING HTC android 2.2.1 or lower with unrEVOked - Windows (updated 20th December 2012)

Some prefer AmonRA. It does allow sd partitioning but gparted is still way better for partitioning. Partitioning breaks gold cards though so you'd have to reload the gold card image to the card.

I prefer cwm as for me AmonRA seems to be missing a lot that I use in.cwm, of which 2.5.0.7 is the best.

Gold card images are written to the boot sector of the sd card so it takes up no usable space. You can make your current card a gold card and when you upgrade, keep it in a safe place. The gold card image is specific to the sd card though so you can't use an image from one card on another. You would have to redo the procedure from.scratch on a new sd

I unfortunately found out about potential problems with cwm 2.5.0.7 on PVT4 HTC Desires (mine is PVT4, erase size 40,000) after having apparently successfully rooted my Desire with Unrevoked 3.32 on Mac OS.

When booting into recovery, I get a bunch of "E: Can't find Misc" and other error messages, all of which I've seen reported by other people in my situation.

Multiple attempts to rerun Unrevoked 3 with AmonRA 2.0.1 as a custom recovery result in the program getting stuck forever on the message "Installing Unrevoked3 service..." (longest I waited before giving up was over an hour...).

I have found that cwm 2.5.1.8 is supposed to be compatible with PVT4 Desires (erase size 40,000), yet attempting to run Unrevoked 3 with cwm 2.5.1.8 as a custom recovery still doesn't seem to get me rooted properly. cwm 2.5.1.8 does allow me to get past the "Installing Unrevoked3 service..." stage, only to have the program linger on "Running Root..." a few moments later, then terminate with “Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?”

I'm now stuck with an apparently rooted Desire (S-ON in hboot, yet Superuser Permissions app accounted for...), yet have cwm 2.5.0.7 on it, with the aforementioned "E: Can't find..." error messages.

Should I attempt to use an older version of Unrevoked 3? Where can I get my hands on Unrevoked 3.31 for Mac OS, for example?

Should I perhaps use an even newer version of cwm? I've seen mentions of cwm 3.x.x.x in other forums/threads.

Help?

Edit: I suppose it's version 3.21 I should've been looking for. I found it for Mac OS, ran it with AmonRa 2.0.1. Got my hopes up until it terminated (post the "Running root..." stage and multiple reboots) with "Internal error: couldn't find misc." Recovery mode coincidentally still shows version 2.5.0.7 and those annoying error messages. Help?

Edit 2: Impatience is terrible, isn't it? I went ahead and ran 3.21 with cwm 2.5.1.8. This seems to have worked so far. Unrevoked 3.21 terminated (after multiple success notifications) with "Done." and rebooted my Desire into recovery mode, which now shows as version 2.5.1.8, and NO errors in sight.

Edit 3: Arrrrggggggghh. Disaster strikes. I choose to reboot the system from the cwm 2.5.1.8 menu and my Desire embarks on an endless boot loop. All I can do is remove and reinsert the battery, and let this rest for the night.

Edit 4: Couldn't let it go. Researched boot loops a bit and followed a tip to restore the backup I created via the cwm 2.5.1.8 recovery menu immediately following the apparently successful root. I performed the restore and lo and behold... my Desire is up and running again. Aside from having lost several apps that were originally stored on my SD card (which I'm assuming I can restore later), all seems well (for now).

Sorry about the lengthy post... but perhaps leaving this sequence of events on here in full will prove to be of some assistance to other noobs such as myself.

Fantastic guide(s). Thank you for your hard work in putting this all together:)

In just one evening I've rooted my phone, installed app2sd+ & updated the radio. Am now installing cyanogen. And best of all I understand what I'm doing on each step of the way :)

Ooh look, Cyanogen has just booted! Cheers!

@ guyo, 2.1.5.8 is the alpharev version of cwm to work with 40,000. It's not perfect and if you run into issues I would suggest going to amonra. Best bet now would be to s-off and fastboot flash

Thanks, SURoot.

Problem is, every attempt to use Unrevoked 3 with AmonRa has so far ended in failure for me - Unrevoked 3.32 gets stuck on "Installing unrevoked3 service..." and Unrevoked 3.21 terminates with "Internal error: couldn't find misc." (eerily reminiscent of the errors I received with cwm 2.5.0.7 installed...).

What sort of problems exactly do you foresee with cwm 2.5.1.8? Now that the Desire is seemingly stable with it, I am naturally hesitant to mess with it.

Is there an alternate way of rooting the phone with AmonRa? You recommend s-off and fastboot flash. I'm afraid that, as new as I am to this, I have no idea what these are. Could you provide further information?

Many thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can provide!

I have just seen some issues when wiping, flashing roms and backups. Just not quite doing everything correctly. I dont think it has affected everyone.

Run with it for a bit and see how you get on.

S-off is a custom bootloaded that ignores the security flag. You usually dont need it. Its basically, burning a CD, booting your computer from the CD and following the prompts. But lets cross that bridge only if we need it.

THANKS!

So, can I breathe easy for a while longer with cwm 2.5.1.8? After yesterday's harrowing experiences (sorry - boot loops can really freak a noob out!), I'd like to fool myself for a while longer that I'm good to go with ROM replacements.

I'm actually OK with the stock HTC Froyo firmware. The only real motivations for me to do all this were:

1) Can't stand the limited RAM left over by HTC for app installs (approx. 20 MB on mine!)

2) Need full RTL support for Hebrew messaging/e-mail (am NOT interested in Hebrew UI, though)

Any recommendations?

Thanks again!

RAM is not a problem for Desire. You probably mean the low Internal Storage.
The official GB should help a bit to move more apps to SD card, but the real help is a2sd+ via a custom ROM.

Hi Firstly can i root the following:

Bravo PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 0.93.0001
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27
Aug 10 2010, 17:52

Android version: 2.2
Baseband version: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel version: 2.6.32.15-g2633d94 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number 2.33.161.2 CL284385 release-keys
Software number: 2.33.161.2

Can somebody confirm that I can use the "simple path" provided in this tutorial (use Unrevoked 3.21 to root my phone and install ClockworkMod recovery)?

Also is this the stock rom if i wish to come back ?

Shipped ROMs

RUU_Bravo_Froyo_Vodafone_UK_2.33.161.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_157522_signed.exe

Finally what is the simplest way of taking a safe copy pre rooting. Or do i need to root first, backup an image of the phone then change the ROM ?

Cheers in advance. What a great guide. Just making sure..

Thanks in advance :)

Yes to everything ;)

You can backup apps with titanium backup. It needs root but Google and install visionary+ to get temp root first if you really need to.

Then you need to decide about sms etc. I back mine up to gmail using sms backup+

Cheers SU root

So I do the following ?

1. Root phone
2. Do backup (titanium)
3. Install custom ROM
4. Revert to stock via titanium backup or the downloaded stock ROM

And whats the gold card for and will 2gb Micro SD do ?
Gold card is needed for all branded phones to enable the phone get flashed with a non-branded software. Since you have a Vodafone branded phone, you need to make one.

2GB card is good enough.

How would i know for sure its Vodafone branded ?

It works with any sim and never done anything to it since i got it from VF

Theres nowt obvious...

and is there a gold guide ?

ROOTED!

I felt a little brave and foolishly impatient today that I decided to try the MISC file HEX EDIT workaround for the "Backup CID is missing" problem. I was originally planning to do the safer Downgrade->Root->Reflash route over the weekend but my itchy fingers got the better of me. I figured that if this didn't work out, I'll just do an RUU with my goldcard.

Anyway, long story short, the Hex Edit trick worked and I'm now rooted!
Nandroid, check!
But my hands are still clammy and shaking...and my pulse rate still high. I think I'll call it a day and re-flash to a custom ROM later. (Besides, I've yet to read up on the flashing part...:) )

Soon enough, I'll be rid of that 3UK bloatware on my unit.

Thanks for all the help and advice! It really helped me make informed decisions.

Whats the software version in settings>about phone?

Please post what it says.

Android version: 2.2
Baseband version: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel version: 2.6.32.15-g2633d94 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number 2.33.161.2 CL284385 release-keys
Software number: 2.33.161.2

Yes definitely. the card can be as small as you like. It just writes to the tiny portion of teh card that is the boot sector.

One more question... Oddly enough, my bootloader already indicated that it was S-OFF even before I rooted:

"BRAVO PVT3 SHIP S-OFF"

Is it safe to assume I can skip the Alpharev process?
