Root 2.3 OTA Update w/ Rooted EVO vs an Unrooted Evo

ok so the kernel does not needed be flashed in addition. the stock rom from the looks of it has the kernel. just flash the rom and then flash the radios via hboot not in recovery.

O.K., Sounds good...looks like they are waiting for an answer over in the xda thread also. If you don't mind me asking how did you come up with this answer?

Also what is the process for flashing a radio? I have never done that before...do you need to rename it to PC36IMG.zip?

ocnbrze,

Maybe you know...when flashing this new ROM does the kernel (Kernel - HTC#1 May04 w/ RAMDisk (Stock ROM)) & Firmware (Radio, WiMAX and PRI Updates Must be flashed through hBoot/Fastboot! Not Recovery.) also need to be download from that link and flashed or are those steps already included in the main ROM (4.22.651.2 Rooted & De-Odexed) ?
I still don't have a definitive answer to your question, but my instinct says that you might need to flash them separately. The part about needing to flash them from hBoot makes me think that flashing the ROM from recovery may not flash the firmware, but I could be wrong about this. In the past, I have always flashed radios, WiMAX, and PRIs separately from ROMs.

Well lets put it this way...could flashing each one of those (4.22.651.2 Rooted & De-Odexed ,Kernel - HTC#1 May04 w/ RAMDisk (Stock ROM) & Radio, WiMAX and PRI Updates) separately hurt anything? I mean what is the worst that could happen...it just over writes them if they have already been flashed with just flashing the ROM?

give me a few minutes. im gonna flash this now and get you a more definitive answer.

o.k..
so i can unroot then update then reroot?

i do not feel comfortable doing the odex or reodex. also since i do not know if it will mess up the radios and other things.

and maybe i'll try and flash a sense 2 rom.

noooooooo! do not do that!!!! please read this thread from the beginning. do not unroot and accept the update.

Dude if you un-root you won't be able to re-root until a method is developed for Gingerbread. As long as you do a nandroid you should be O.K. if you screw something up.

If you're up to date, it's unnecessary, but won't hurt anything to do it again. If not, it's a good idea to do it, your phone will run better, probably get a little better battery life. But you'll need to study up on flashing from hBoot. I still can't link you, but if you search, you'll find threads that walk you through it.

Actually now that I think about it I am pretty sure evomattnc had me flash something from hBoot last week. I am pretty sure you just rename the file "PC36IMG.zip", put it in the root of the SD card and let hBoot do the rest.

That is the poster child of the hard way to do things. You'll be flushing your root straight down the toilet, and there is currently no exploit to get it back.

Flashing a ROM sounds intimidating, I know, but once you've done it, it's not that big of a deal. It's really not hard. Just take your time, read the guide all the way through, print it out, and follow the steps one by one. It's easier than rooting. If you successfully rooted your phone, you can flash a ROM.

It shows s-off and hboot version 2.10.0001. When I boot into recovery mode, it shows ClockworkMod Recovery version 1.2.6.0.1. From there I was able to select reboot, and reboot the phone.

Then you are fine. If you want to flash the rooted update, it is available to do now and you will not lose root doing it.

Got it flashed everything. Not much difference. Different pad for a PIN to unlock device was the first thing I noticed.

ok so it does come with a stock kernel. phone is up and running. those are just different kernels that you can flash in addition to the stock ones. now the radio does have to be flashed in hboot. and yes you are correct in that you have to rename the file to PC36IMG exactly in order for hboot to see it. gonna try this kernel and see how it plays Kernel - HTC#1 May04 w/ RAMDisk

O.K., I am going to give it try right now...Although I am a bit scared since I will be loosing my 4.3.1-netarchy-toastmod-cfs-havs-nosbc-universal kernel which at this point when I take my phone off of charge in the morning BMW tells me I have an estimate of almost two days of usage.

After you flash it, you could make a nandroid and see if that kernel plays well with the now rom. It may not, but you will have the nandroid to restore if it doesnt.

True...but I think I am going to give the new one a whirl for a few days and see how it plays out...hopefully netarchy will develop something new for Gingerbread.

I've used that kernel and had terrific results also. But think of it this way: you're running a better OS now. There is a wealth of talented devs that love this phone, and within a week, we'll have just as good choices available, likely even better. Watch the rooted forum, you'll see a bunch of kernel threads start popping up.

The downside is that you are now officially a geek. Welcome to the club.

according to xHausx, you don't need to rename the radio file. as long as PC36100 is in the filename, HBOOT will pick it up and find it. easy to test. and if it doesn't work, then rename it :)

The ROM contains OS and Kernel. xHausx provided standalone kernels so that if you decided you wanted to try a custom one and then go back to stock, you can just flash the stock kernel and not have to flash the whole damn ROM again.

LMAO...tell me about, a little over a week again I had no clue what I was talking about...this stuff is a blast.

On a side note when you did your wipe before flashing the ROM did you do a Wipe all/Factory reset or just Cache & Dalvik?

Ahhh...makes very good sense...no pun intended. Maybe I will play around with the 4.3.1-netarchy-toastmod-cfs-havs-nosbc-universal and see what it does with the new ROM
