Root [Kernel][GB] KoumaKernel 2.5

Alright got Kouma installed finally via the HalfAssedMod route as installing Kouma onto my current phone configuration results in soft brick at boot screen. (just sits at kouma boot logo for 10+ minutes then blank screen for rest of eternity).

My best guess as to why it wasn't working was perhaps the modified build.prop file I have which has the 3G tweaks from the 3G super charger script installed.

So I used "HalfAssedRom" to install it since it's basically stock phone wipe with Kouma preinstalled and now I finally have it. (plus the HalfAssedRom mod was kind enough to alter the appearence of the baseband so that it shows as FA19. I think the mod has EJ06 as the true baseband version) I won't need to use Autostarts this time around but installed it anyway incase Samsung's next update is more of a fail then the FA19 one was. :P

So now my current questions remaining:

1. Whats the best route I should go when upgrading the phone's SD card? It is indeed using the EXT4 system now and most likely has the apps migrated over to the EXT4 partitions. I can copy over a back up of my data in the FAT partition with no sweat, but the EXT4 stuff is going to be tricky. I don't have Linux on my PC, so I can't really play with the linux partitions directly.

So how would I go about copying over the EXT4 and swap partitions when getting the new card?

2. Boot animations. I'm aware this kernel has them. But right now it seems to have 3 animations. The kouma boot logo which is static, then goes to my stock Boost Mobile animation (which I plan on removing by killing the QMG file) and new boot animation with "Android" in the center of the screen with a custom font and simple glow animation and stuff.

I am hoping that "Android" animation and the kouma logo are in the same boot animation zip file. As pretty as the kouma logo is, I want to kill it. I got enough boot animations flying through my phone at boot. I only want the initial Samsung logo on power on (that very first screen it shows is baked in the rom as a JPG and I've heard that replacing it is very tricky and dangerous, so I won't touch it since If I screw that up, I get a hard brick and I'm really screwed) my custom animation, and maybe the android animation it shows depending on how it's displaying that one.

It never does show the second samsung logo, so perhaps the Android animation is a custom QMG file replacing the samsung one. (can't possibly be custom though if that is the case as no one has figured out the QMG files to my knowledge, so if it is, Kouma or the guy who made HalfAssedRom used an existing QMG from a different phone)

I won't know for sure until I take a look into the system/media folder and see what's going on there. But I'm hoping that the kouma logo isn't baked into the kernel. :P

Also another interesting thing I noticed. The Android OS version in the About Phone menu displays as 2.3.6....Is that really 2.3.6 or 2.3.5 faking that version number to allow non supported apps to install? The look of the OS doesn't look different then 2.3.5 so I'm leaning on the latter. I'm also not sure if that version number is the result of Kouma's kernel or the HalfAssedRom...

I'll answer the question about the SD card and leave the rest to the people that are running this ROM .

The best SD card is a class 10 . It writes and reads faster than the lower classes . At the moment , I am running a 16gb class 10 and I can see a huge improvement over my 4gb class 4 .

i just installed kk2.0 and it's running fine...i think no bootloop problems or anything...my question is will i be able to run darktremors a2sd and get rid of link2sd ????

Yep, class 10 card is what I'm planning on getting. But need a good way of copying over the phone specific stuff over from the EXT partitions to the new one other wise when I pop in the new card, I will have whatever is in my FAT partition, but the OS may malfunction since the apps would be move to the SD card. But now that I've installed more apps, it looks like they are going to phone's internal memory still. I guess I need a separate app to enable moving non-movable apps to the SD card.

The way Kouma has 2.0 set up kinda cool . The apk's go to the sdcard and some data goes to the internal . It helps the speed . I installed a 19.5 gb app the other day and aprox 5 mb's showed up on internal . See what I mean ?

KK 1.2 and 1.3 are different . All the data goes to the ext which still shows up as internal on Titanium . The difference is it shows the whole partition and is a little slower for lower class cards .

Example : 1024mb ext. partition = 1024mb's internal minus installed apps .

T easiest way to switch to a new card is to make a backup in cwm, back up your fat partition to pc, put in new card, partition, copy fat partition data to new sd, and restore your backup

cwm backs up sd-ext when making a backup.

KoumaKernel 1.5/2.0 doesn't work on stock roms, thats why you were bootlooping.

to change your boot animation delete the bootani.qmg/samsungani.qmg from /system/media and put the bootanimation.zip in there you want to use. the koumakernel splash is built into the kernel, it can't be changed.

and yes the OS is 2.3.6.

FINALLY... after all the long hours reading and all the searching for the hiden instructions on how to double partition the sd-card in order to make the Best Out of the KK2.0...

I've GOT IT...

Kouma, this thing (KK2.0) it's PURE AWESOMENESS...

Thanks for for all the hard work and dedication that you're puting into this...

This is my current kk2.0 ct 3.2 experience... Started from scrath following rougefoxx's setup (thanks) .... Stock with odin then i installed ct3.2 (it formatted my ext, so i was good) then kk.2.0, then volume fix, and finaly the beats for prevail fix by blood ( thanks ).. Okay.. Then i fiddled with l2sd... I figured out that if you install it, and set it to move apps to external but only move the libarary files and the other option and not the app itself... It will move the app without compromising space on internall.. Even with kk2.0 my internal would still fill up i might be wrong... But its working for me . Hope it helps ! Good day everyone!

I belief you'll just have to make a partition. On the new card.

Roughly big enough to fit your old SD_ext in.

Then just transfer the recovery to the new SD card and recover.
That's what I'm thinking of doing.

Why would you use l2sd with KK2.0?

KK2.0 mounts the sd-ext as part of the /data folder structure. l2sd would just cause mountains of problems

Ahh now that I recall the "prevail" logo that occurs immedietely after the first Samsung label is part of the kernel. The kouma kernel logo basically replaces that. So I can live with that. :P

I already removed the bootani.qmg and samsungani.qmg and got a random bootanimations.zip file just to make sure it works and voila, it's what I want. I see the initial samsung logo when phone turns on, then kouma logo for a bit, then the boot animation I installed, then it's finished and I see my lock pattern screen. :D

I'll work on making my boot animation. Thanks for all the help! I'll definitely do another CWM backup since it does SD-EXT too. Didn't know that. :D

EDIT: Nearly done with my animation. Here's a preview of what I made:

mybooty.jpg

It starts out with no icons at bottom and "loads" in a manner similar to classic MacOS. Yes there is a happy mac icon at the begining. I even have the mac boot sound. I will add a delay to the boot sound (since the boot sound plays near the end of the kouma logo) and will flip over the images I made so they face the correct direction on the phone. :D

It's set to run at 2 fps since it has no fancy animations and such. Just about any phone could run this without lag. I have no idea if it will play all the way through before the OS finishes loading, but my part1 section of the animation will take care of that. :P

I may post this if anyone is interested in it. :D

Thanks Kouma for making this possible. :D

- I don't. Can you explain it to me?

Eeww...
Apple sucks.
Lolz in a way.
If you want it to play it on time.
Redo the sound and add a silent bumper before it loads.

Never mind. I tripped over the hidden spot on the first page. I guess ill never know the joys of it all since I'm not an advanced user. You guys suck. lol.

Hey Kourma any chance you'll be going back to the simple and fast original Boot animation you had for the kernel? The new one is a bit flashy and sideways. It sorta seems awkward when you compare it to others that are right side up. The original one was perfect and simple. It worked well with the CTMOD animation.

im currently running ctmod3.2 with kk2.0 my question is should i do a factory wipe and re-install kk2.0 then ctmod3.2
cause i dont think the sd card is formated right i partitioned it 4096 and 0 swap but i still have to move everything manually to the sd card thats one reason i havent gotten rid of link2sd
how do i format the sd card to ext 4 ?

It's working fine. read through the thread and see the many many ways to identify that it's working.

Move to SDcard in the applications manager is moving the app from the sd-ext to your vfat sdcard partition.
in other words:
bush_doing_it_wrong_1.jpg

i went into cwm and under mounts and storage i went to format /sd-ext
and it comes back with an error
formatting /sd-ext...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs fablock/mmcblk0p2
error formatting /sd-ext !

any ideas?
or is this the wrong thread

yeah thats what i was thinking.... But for somereason it doesnt give me problems... Everything loads fine. And everything links fine.... With kk2.0 once an app was installed it would still take alot of memory ex: Maps, flash player etc... And yet im at 101 internal as to if only used kk2.0 i was at 80 something
