Offical Gingerbread coming Friday to the X.

#1: Will I have to sbf back to virgin Froyo in order to take the update?

Well to start...Madden and Blockbuster MUST be present to receive the update...that i can tell you with 100% certainty...

Now...whether or not you can accomplish this by simply reinstalling them...or flashing a backup you may have made before removing them?...impossible to say...

The only way to guarantee that the update will work is to SBF...

#2: Is there a way to root this GB update?
Team Black Hat says they should have a root option by Friday...BUT...that does not mean a one-click option, or that you will be able to actually root the OTA...

what it means is that you will likely have to flash a pre-rooted version like we have been doing with the leaks...

basically...if you want to keep root on GB...the best way to do this is going to be to wait for them to release a flashable zip...

if this update behaves the same way that the leaks have behaved...you will have to flash .588 GB, then .595 GB and then the OTA (.596)

#3: If I choose not to update will Big Red know it?
Yes...will they do anything about it? doubt it...

I wonder if the bootloader key will be changed? If it is changed, we won't be able to sbf to 2.3.340 anymore, which means there will be no sbf.....who knows if we will be able to get a .596 full sbf later on.

well all the other OTA's changed the key correct?...that is going to be interesting...

hopefully someone can get us a full .596 SBF file...

Yup, all the other ones did, and I'm assuming this one will too, so that will suck for sure. I really like having that safety net :D:D:D

i'm sure P3 or someone will bust out with an SBF of the official OTA. ...i hope anyways. I like having not only that as a safety net but also as a way to start at a totally fresh state.

I just updated to 2.3.340
I want to format my phone

Should I wait for this update before I do it? And what's gingerbread / what makes it so desireable? ??? Cab istill root after update to gingerbread???

Moderator? When did this happen? Congratulations! :rolleyes:

I was just thinking the same thing! Congrats, Steven! Very much deserved :) Although the red clashes with Yoda :p

Hopefully this is all true. I want me some OTA Gingerbread....so that way we can all start talking about how much we want the next update...right? I mean come on we have to have something to complain about ;):D

You're better off waiting until we know the limitations of the OTA rom and have the tools (SBF) to get you back to stock if you screw it up. :D

I just looked up gingerbread and it sounds like its a big stability update.
So us it really coming? I read a few articles where they all said its probably not gonna happen cause they've said they'll put it out before and don't

If you install the OTA you won't be able to root. You should wait for the update zip from TBH if you want to keep root.

At this point my guess is that if this means anything, it means that the soak will hit on Friday. Till we get confirmation on that, however, I think I'll remain cautiously skeptical...

This is more of a feature update. From Android 2.2->2.3 (Froyo->Gingerbread). While I'm sure there were some stability fixes in Gingerbread, it's main changes are features based. Many people are running early leaked versions and the concensus I've seen is that it is pretty stable.

What's ota what's zip bth?????
Huh????
OTA=Over the air
Zip=Zip

No offence intended, but if you don't know what a zip file is, then please read up more before trying to modify your phone. We are here to help. The last thing you want to do is mess something up, which novice (and even advanced) users can do very easily.

Got a question I rooted using the z4root method. If I unroot using the z4root will I still be able to get the update friday?

a zip file is compressed files

it contains more than one thing in a single file, when you unzip it, you extract all data from that zipped file, though some things that involve these phones you do not want to unzip it :)

Im pretty sure most of us are already on gingerbread so I see no point in updating to this until its rooted, and there are ROMS like Apex ready to go.
