Root [ROM][WIP] BACKside ROM (CM7) + Green Machine Theme

Hi guys newbie here. I have a question. Do I have to reflash my phone every time there is an update because it take a bit of time to reflash and restore everything so do I have to do this with each update? Thanks

You don't need to install an update if you don't want to. You may miss out on some additional features but if it ain't broke, don't need to fix it.

Before installing the update, if you just wipe cache partition and dalvik cache I don't think you will need to restore anything.

When you update, just wipe cache partion and dalvik cache. No gapps.
When it reboots you won't even be able to tell right at first that it updated. Everything will look the same, all your apps and theme, right where they were before you updated.

To JerryScript: BACKside updater worked flawlessly.

Tried to apply the latest update tonight following Jerry's recommendations on the first page of this thread. I was running his 11222011 build, which I would highly recommend people give a try if you haven't (heck, of course most of you have in this thread probably, LOL :D ).

Anyhow, followed steps 1-7 on the install from a previous build through recovery using CWM-based recovery v4.0.1.5 Upon trying to reboot to system, I can't make it past the boot animation of the android guy. I know something's wrong if it's there more than 10 minutes, so I pulled the battery and powered the phone back on. Upon the second attempt at booting, I received the same results.

Not a OMG!!! moment either time, as I had a good backup of course before starting this. I simply wiped cache and dalvik cache and restored my backup, leaving me running just fine as I was on the prior build.

Just wondering what some thoughts on this might be? First time poster, but been following along for awhile. Picked up the V on the Saturday morning after Black Friday for the $50 Target deal. A rockin upgrade from the painful Intercept I had prior.

Great work on the ROM Jerry! I find the V to be a much funnier modding/ROM'ing phone than the Intercept. It's exciting to see your work, and I like many others I've seen on here respect the time and effort you've put forth. :virtual pint to you good sir:
Ok Ben, I shall perform the steps again and give it a good long while, as I have around 30 applications installed, utilizing Link2SD. Which of course I got setup with the help of the guide on this forum.

Is there a time that I should just say to heck with it and revert back again? I.E. if it continues for an hour or more would it be safe to assume (I know the dangers of assuming) that it won't flash properly?
Well, I did the steps again, and let it run overnight after the reboot. Still get the same results of being stuck at the boot animation screen when I woke up this morning.

I certainly gave it more time than this, letting it run over night!

Checked my md5sum before I ever tried to install the upgrade, and it does match. Just double checked again and it is a valid download.

I've restored from my backup again and back to the prior version. I redownloaded the file and verified it again....I guess I'll try it again at a later point today. This is odd.
Well I tried again, reverified new dowload file to have correct md5sum. Still got the same results. Not a huge issue for me, (other than the fact I'm teased by not seeing the easter egg) as I'm running along just fine on the last version. But it will drive my tech mind mad until I get a grasp on why it's reacting this way.
As posted in my original post in this thread:
I guess I can always just wipe everything and install this update fresh, but it's a bit of a hassle sometimes with Link2SD and having to restore through TIBU.
Just wondering if anyone may have any insight, background is in the quotes above..still haven't upgraded from the 11222011 build, as I've tried with EVERY version of the ROM posted since then with the results being the same as above.

I've left my v sitting on the boot screen for up to 12 hours on multiple attempts with no success on multiple versions that have been posted since the 11222011 build.

I have Link2SD setup, which is part of the reason I haven't just wiped and installed as a new ROM, thinking I may have issues with some of my 50ish apps.

Any thoughts? I've verified md5 on every version I've downloaded.

I know it's a pita, but have you tried doing a complete wipe/format and reflash? First backup your apps with TitaniumBackup or MyBackup, then:

1- Boot into recovery
2- Wipe cache
3- Under advanced wipe dalvik cache
4- Under mounts, format boot, system, data, and cache
5- Flash the ROM's zip file
6- Flash the gapps zip file
7- Reboot
8- Skip singing into your Google account till you enable wifi (so much faster)
9- Enable wifi
10- Under Settings>>Accounts sign into your Google account and sync.
11- Download TitaniumBackup and use it to restore your apps, but do not restore system apps or data!

Be sure to check the md5sum of the ROM's zip file before flashing it. If you still get stuck at the bootanimation, then something is most likely wrong with your sdcard. ;)

With link2sd it's just a matter of backing up with titanium backup setting up link2sd to auto link then batch restore and it does it all for you. I have 200 apps and do a fresh install with this every time. There have been alot of changes since 11/22 and I would recommend a clean install of 1-20.

I'll probably proceed as you're suggested Jerry, even though it is a pita and I'm stubborn. ;) I want to figure out WHY it doesn't want to install via an upgrade, which is the other reason I hadn't done an install as if moving from a different ROM. ;)

I hadn't considered a bad sd card, never had an issue with it that I could tell, but a good point to keep in mind.

Got it, not sure what I've been so worried about if it's really that easy. I know there's been ALOT of changes, that's why I've been trying every version! :D

Thanks to you both, I'll let you know how things work out with this.

All is good guys. Performed both of your instructions and up on the new build with all apps restored. Thanks! :)

So far, new build is working flawlessly (dumped GO launcher once again, after doing a side by side comparison of BACKside stock ADW launcher, which boots faster, and has less lag than GO launcher) the updater app worked very well, and I did notice an ever so slight decrease in battery life, but not enough to cause any irritation or problems, id say about a 2-3% faster drain. Which is no big deal at all, rom performs well, less force closes (probably due to trashing go launcher) overall, yet another excellent build. Oh, and I love the boot animation. Annd one more thing, accepting any ideas on an icon for the update check app? ;)

Updated to 01/20. Camcorder is missing from drawer and is not listed in manage applications. Still works when accessed using the switch in the camera app. Tried fresh install, same thing.

Not a fan of the new boot screen. How can I change it back?

If you mean the black and white BACKside IHO, I don't think you can. If you mean the green particles swirling around the Android, you can flash a theme or download Boot Animation Changer from the market.

Yeah, I know how to change the bootanimation.zip. I don't like the new BACKside screen.

You can change it, and there are video tutorials for how, I'll try to find a link when I get home. Search for unpack boot image optimus v. ;)

I found these instructions. Downloaded boot_screen_log_creation_package. Created my image in Corel PhotoPaint and saved as png. Put it in the RLE folder. Open command window in RLE folder and convert_image_to_rle.bat logo.png. And always get this error.

I'm trying to use this for my boot image. Sized to 320x480

Does it have to be saved as a png with any special parameters? Does this converter work with win 7 64? What is the meaning of life? Am I asking too many questions?
