Root 2.3 OTA Update w/ Rooted EVO vs an Unrooted Evo

Sorry about not clerifying that, after accidentally updating, i still had S-OFF the same as it was, but i lost root privledges and was not able to run programs like TB * root and whatnot...but after the accidental update, it did not set S-ON.

Ok. That makes more sense. You were still rooted just did not have custom recovery or a rooted rom. If you had s-on you would have been stuck with a stock phone til they found an exploit for the new hboot. If you have s-off even if the hboot updated to 2.16, we should still be able to get you a custom recovery and flash a rom of your choice without issue. Hboot only matters to get s-off as far as I know.

Thanks so much! I'm really really slow today (no sleep), so sorry if I'm asking exceptionally dumb things...

So that version (4.22.651.2) is the newest Gingerbread update that came out 6/6? And once I flash this, I'll be "up to date" etc?

I'm going to have to re-read the Rooting for Dummies post and see if I can remember how to make a nandroid. :P Right now I can barely remember how to turn on the phone.

OH YEAH, because I used the Rooting for Dummies guide, I used Unrevoked3. However, later in the guide it says Unrevoked3 automatically comes with Unrevoked Forever. Doesn't Unrevoked Forever mean your phone will still be rooted after updates like Gingerbread? Do I even technically HAVE Unrevoked Forever? SO confused. ><

Accepting an OTA update can cause you to lose root and turn your phone to s-on. Unrevoked 3 does flash Forever when it runs the rooting process. Accepting an OTA while rooted can cause a number of issues. It might not do anything at all, might update your hboot and fail to flash the rom, or other things. It is always a bad idea to accept an OTA while rooted. When the new update dropped, there were rooted stock roms out within hours so there was/is no need to accept the OTA if you want to stay rooted.

can someone tell me.. is their cameras fuzzy now with the new update? also, i am trying to get the radio to flash, but not sure how to.. i booted up, is there a hboot that i gotta do? is that under the recovery option? i got the zip file on my root directory..

thanks in advance

Ok, about to flash the new sense rom, got a quick question. If i want to update my radios, I need to flash this from the post...?:

Firmware:
Must be flashed through hBoot/Fastboot! Not Recovery.
PC36IMG - Radio, WiMAX and PRI Updates (MD5: 2E5C63EA59891A69F6D55C257CF165D5)

If I do that, wont that overwrite my hboot...? I thought thats what the pc36img did...

I just want the newer radio, see if my reception at my house improves a bit or not. I do not want to loose root or recovery...

If you flash that update it will NOT affect your hboot version. That is strictly a radio update for baseband/wimax/nv. Do make a nandroid with your wimax(4g) keys before flashing that as you can(not will) lose them in a radio flash.

how do you do that? just do another nandroid before flashing?

thanks man, maybe thats why i havent had any issues sofar.. is there 2 files i need to flash? or will PC36IMG.zip be the only thing i need to flash?

Also, if the keys do mess up, what will i have to do?

hey guys, first a big thank you for all the information listed in this thread. After reading through it I was able to update my stock rooted Evo to 2.3.3. I also decided to update the radios, as I have never seemed to get a strong WiMax signal.

Both Updates completed with out an error, but now if I attempt to turn on my 4G, it sits in "turning on..." but never goes past that. The did the radio update through HBOOT (renamed the .zip file with no problems).

Any thoughts on what I should do? I did make a nandroid backup before I started.

glad you got the 2.3.3 on there.. i havent done the radio update yet.. as i been confused for 2 days.. lol.. and i dont get good wimax here anyway..

hope it gets worked out..

S-OFF means your bootloader is unlocked.
S-ON means your bootloader is locked.

But what does THAT mean?

Locked bootloader means that certain partitions on your internal memory are protected; they can only be mounted read-only; you can't write to them. To replace your stock ROM, you need write access to these protected partitions. That's why the bootloader needs to be unlocked before you can flash ROMs.

I updated the radios as well, and had no problem connecting to 4G, but couldn't actually communicate on the WiMax network. I showed a full connection to 4G in the status bar, but couldn't access web pages in the browser, or connect to any app that required an Internet connection.

I ended up fixing it by...
1. Powering off my phone, removing the battery for 30 seconds, then replacing it and starting the phone back up.
2. Going to Settings > System Updates > Update Profile. I completed this, then did Update PRL in the same menu. I rebooted once that was finished, and could access the Internet across WiMax.

I don't think the reboot fixed the issue, since I had rebooted several times before updating profile/PRL. Not sure if this will help, but wanted to let you know what worked for me.

Anyone having issues with their camera? I am. Gives a weird effect. Definitely not like it should be. Anything I can do?

I appreciate the advice. I updated both, but it still appears like my radio is not turning on.

Wondering if updating my radios again would be a good idea???

Or is there an easy way to roll them back?

can you post one of the picks so we can see the effect.

also..another reminder...

many are reporting much better battery life with the new radios... YOU CAN flash back to older radios just like flashing the new radios...

just make sure you have a nandroid of your wimax keys if you get into a habbit of flashing radios. I have yet to lose mine, but it has happened to others.

I flashed the camera fix on XDA. Seems better but still not as clear as it used to be.

A couple questions, is there a way for me to know what radio version I was on previously? Can I restore from my nandroid? Or do I have to download it from here: [ Radios ][ 6-3 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

I performed a nandroid, do I need to do anything special beyond that to back up my wimax keys?

if you are on a sense rom then it is in phone settings/about phone/software/ your baseband is your radio.

as far as nandroid backups are concern, if you are using clockwork mod 2.6+ it will automaically backup your keys. im amon ra 2.3 you have to check off wimax keys if you want them backed up with your nandroid.
