Root ROOTING For Dummies

Oh ok. Thanks. One other question. Do i have to change the rom to erase the sprint crap that runs all the time. I have root explorer, but it keeps telling me that i'm not rooted.

Not necessarily but its best to do that and I would recommend it.

thanks for the help nick. I will look into rom's at work tommorow. If you have any suggestions for a rom thats acts like the htc one it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a few questions about rooting. I have an jail broken iPhone 4 right now, but i want to try to root my girlfriends evo 4g. Jailbreaking is much easier than rooting, so I'm having a bit trouble figuring out things. It has very old software, radio, etc. Keep in mind, I have NEVER rooted an phone before. So please talk to me as if I were a dummy :)

H-boot : .79
Radio: 1.39.00.05.31
Firmware version: 2.1
Kernel version 2.6.29
Build number : 1.32.651.6
Software number: 1.32.651.6

Do you need to update the android software to 2.2, the radio to 2.15 and h-boot to .97 to start rooting?

I have tried using unrevoked 3 but it gave me an error before it started to root stating that my radio version was unsupported.

Go to menu > settings > system updates and update everything in there. I'm not sure if that will help but that's where I would start.

Weird I'm almost sure unrevoked works with all the hboot out there. Sad to see a .79 go but it won't matter to her that her hboot changed I'm sure. Auto root over on xda would probably work without an update but like I said it won't matter to her

Ok weird unrevoked works with much older and much newer radios than yours but not yours...works with a diff 1.39, works with a 1.36 to 2.15 but not yours...oh well

Please verify: With rooted phones which updates can we accept.

Firmware Y/N
Profile Y/N
PRL Y/N

HTC software Y/N

Thank you in advance!

would this update the radio and hboot?

It should, thats the point. She never got or accepted an ota? You need to update firmware, software, everything really. But not to root. You only need a diff radio to root but flashing a different rom after you root will update your software anyhow...1000 ways to skin a cat and all

Is there an alternative way to root?

Autoroot over on xda, its on or near the top page of the evo dev section. Should be pretty easy with .76 hboot, also if you root the eng bootloader you will have the fastboot extended commands...

Wow I'm actually a little shocked by that. I will certainly postpone my purchase of an evo 3d...

Yup...There's some theory's going on over at themikmik...Luckily I've got another year under contract so I'll let all them figure that out. I think it will be a big mistake for HTC and Sprint to do that. A lot of people won't be buying it.

Well im not so sure whether it is a mistake. What is the percentage of people that actually root their phone? And how many of them wont buy it because it is crypto signed? Then you have to weigh that against insurance claims from those that "brick" and return. I would be willing to bet that their losses wont be that grave if they experience any.

Does that mean I think its a good idea? Certainly not but then again im a root user. I would argue what the dev community does is valuable to HTC, but is it really? Do they watch us? And it seems sprint is pushing this, its certainly not a value to sprint to have a dev community...

No one is cracking a 256 bit encryption anytime soon...

Just hope it leaks...? I'll be waiting on my purchase though.

I agree with everything you just said. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I've got a year and honestly I'm quite happy with what I have right now and I'm sure Mik and the other devs will get their hands on the new sense, honeycomb, gb stuff and port it over.

its actually good for me because i dont have an upgrade and didnt want to pay retail for the 3d but if all the devs jumped i would have. They may stick around for a while now and continue working on the last great unlocked phone :D
